Hurray to the Declaration of Independence. Not many governmental documents include God these days. Our forefathers knew what they weee doing.

Hurray!! Here’s to an ever-evolving, more inclusive, more progressive US-of-A where everyone is welcome with open arms.

“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me:
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”

Another year older, another year wiser?

Happy Birthday USA. And many wishes more for strength in unity and fairness for all it’s citizens. No matter, race, color, creed, religion, non religion, sex or sexual orientation, or wealth or lack of wealth, short, or tall, or fat or skinny, handicapped or healthy, beautiful or ugly, young or old..

I love the 4th of July. I’m so happy to live in such a beautiful and diverse country. Diverse people, diverse terrain, and diverse climates. Truly from sea to shining sea I appreciate this land and the foundation of freedom we enjoy. I also love the fireworks and that it is an American holiday that across the country so many people are celebrating at once.

@Apparently_Im_The_Grumpy_One Does it actually have the word God in it? I know it speaks of a creator. I’m terrible with history and that sort of thing.

Poor old Uncle Sam, someone should turn off the life support.

JLeslie's avatar

@ucme Why would you say such a thing? Not nice.

@flutherother I would like to answer with “yes”, but . . . with more Americans struggling to pay for health care & prescription medications, and with the nation’s transportation infrastructure a year older & increasingly crumbling, I’m not sure this country is wiser.

Still, America is more inclusive than ever before, especially with gay marriage now legal in all 50 states (thanks to the Supreme Court) and more of the nation is moving toward acceptance of the transgendered community.

So, even though positive progress is being made in some areas, wisdom still seems to be sadly lacking on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. and among the boat load of Republican candidates officially (and unofficially) running for President.

@JLeslie Just a spot of gentle ribbing, no literal intent should be implied.

NPR has a tradition where they read the entire Declaration of Independence.

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet,
Whose stern impassion’d stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America! God mend thine ev’ry flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!

O beautiful for heroes proved In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved,
And mercy more than life!
America! America! May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness,
And ev’ry gain divine!

O Beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam,
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
