How to gain weight in a healthy way?

Asked by Unbroken (10746points) July 16th, 2015

I am a 29 yr old female mild activity level though I do exercise twice a week for an hour and non cardio 4 days a week for two ten to fifteen minute sessiona. So I believe my calorie count should be around 2100 to 2400. Though not a calorie counter typically I did it for a week and found I typically get 1500 to 1700 Cals a day. I try to eat more but end up feeling stuffed and sluggish and less hungry later.

Here are a few tactics I have tried:
-eat high cal foods like avocado and coconut buts and seeds as well as butters.

-Add flax or chia or hemp to foods to bulk them up.

-Eat heavier nightly meals BC experts encourage the opposite for weight loss

-Juice with high cal items such as almond milk protein powders and or nutritional powders as well as lots of fruit…..

More protein. Eat two eggs for breakfast, lean beef, fish or chicken for dinners. Get more green, leafy veggies.

Hmm. I do consume and love protein the expense is what gets me. Though I thought I was consuming enough it is something to check. The greens I do but I see them as fillers. Maybe more myth then not but the celery or carrot munchers or those on a perpetual salad diet make me think weight loss….

Maybe allow yourself some daily dark chocolate?
Fruit juices would probably be the easiest way to add calories.

I’m curious what your body-type goal is.

Your calorie count should be used to decide how to achieve your weight goal. Your weight goal usually is mostly dependent on height, yet you didn’t mention your height. Other factors like muscle mass can affect the goal, but you don’t sound like you are doing intense muscle building, so let’s go with typical averages.

Without doing the actual
Math 1600 probably winds you up at 130 and 2300 will put you up at 160. Ish. What do you weigh now consuming the 1600?

How tall are you?

If you are average height, let’s say 5’3”-5’7” I wouldn’t add a ton more calories. I’d add things like legumes (black beans, pintos, garbanzos) some nuts, dark leafy greens with vinegar state dressings.

If you don’t know your cholesterol I would check that before adding more animal to your diet.

I wonder why you are fighting your body type.

Are you eating nutrient dense food?
Are you exercising on a regular basis?
Is your alcohol, tobacco, etc. use in moderation?

If so, IMHO, you may be focusing your energy on the wrong type of effort.

Given your calorie consumption, if you’re a rack of bones, then you should see a doctor.

If you’re not a rack bones, then enjoy care-free eating while you can, because the odds are great that in a few years you’ll be putting on weight without even trying.

It’s hard to offer specifics without knowing what you look like now, or what you think you want to look like.

May I ask your height and weight? Perhaps you are just fine the way you are.

Well according to online tests I am currently an ectomorph I used to be what they described as a mesomorph. I want to gain weight because I am losing it. It is true I used to have a lot more muscle but I haven’t been in the 120’s since high school and was a healthy weight. I am 5’6 and as stated before strong well defined muscles. Less strong now but my body is starting to look a bit skeletal nonetheless.

I hate that ^^^. I’m 5’7 and I used to carry 120 like a queen. Now, anything below 135, and I look like a junky. Of course, I don’t have the muscle tone I used to have when I was playing ball 3X a week and doing physical labor like a man.

Have you and your doctor ruled out any health issues? If not, you may want to check with her/him. My mother-in-law couldn’t gain weight because she had hyperthyroidism. I’m not saying you have that issue; simply bringing up the possibility of a health related reason for why you can’t gain weight.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Again, may I have your weight and height?

Unbroken's avatar

5’6 and 125 lb

You mean you can look gaunt even if you were once that weight and not overly skinny?

Tedibear I have hypothyroidism. But maybe I need a med adjustment. I am waiting on a referell to an endocrinologist my doc thinks I need one

Unbroken's avatar

Even if that were the case sometimes I lose a # a day it isn’t constant but I’m moving Down the scale fast enough I am uncomfortable with it and I do look unhealthy

Yes, @Unbroken. There is a difference between an athletic, fit 15–40 year old who weighs 120 pounds, and a 56 year old who weighs 120 pounds.

5.6”, 125 sounds really good to me.

Unbroken's avatar

Maybe it sounds good but I was always very muscular even now that I’ve lost a lot of muscle I am quite strong.

I bet you look great.

Definitely get the thyroid checked. If you’re very hypo it might be killing your appetite. Very hyper and it might be burning up the calories a little faster than usual.

Unbroken's avatar

That had already been my intention, though I had not linked weight loss and thyroid issues. I’m afraid I have to wait until the end of August to be seen. thanks for the additional info on thyroid adjusting the dose myself might be a good stop gap measure.

tedibear's avatar

@Unbroken, I’m glad you have an appointment. If you think about it, let us know how it goes.

JLeslie's avatar

@Unbroken Have you seen the doctor within the last 12 months? If so get him to order the lab work for you now. You don’t need a doctor’s appointment to get blood drawn. It takes weeks for a thyroid medicine change to take affect and even then you might need to tweak the dose again. You could easily be talking about being hormonally out of whack for 3–6 months.

Are you having other thyroid symptoms? Hair dry and falling out? Dry eyes? Sleeping less? Sleeping more? Heart pounding? Blood pressure changes?

Your thyroid might be just fine, I don’t know, but it sounds to me like you haven’t been checked in a long time.
