Can you buy vegetarian (or vegan) crayons?

Asked by elbanditoroso (33153points) August 2nd, 2015

I was reading that many crayons are made with some portion of stearic acid, which is derived from plants and animals.

Are there vegetarian crayons on the market?

Not sure if there’s any way to tell if the stearic acid used in a particular product is derived from plant or animal sources, but if you’re trying to avoid it just to be safe you’re going to have a hard go of it. Stearic acid is used in damn near everything from crayons to candy, to car batteries, to fireworks, to lubricants, to plastics manufacturing.

I think you’re probably overthinking your color by numbers. If you feel that strongly about it though maybe consider switching to colored pencils?
