How many vacuum cleaners do you have?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46808points) August 7th, 2015

I have 3. A Shark, a Kirby and a shop vac.

I like the Shark a lot. It’s light and easy to work with. You just dump the bucket, no bags, never had to replace the belt, and I’ve had it 8 years or so.

However, some of you may remember my question about buying a Kirby for $1,000. Well, I did. Man, that sucker does vacuum! But, it’s a hassle. For one thing, I have to replace bags and belts and only recently found someone in a nearby town that carries them. Otherwise I’d have to drive 50 miles. And it’s pretty expensive. I went almost a year without being able to use the Kirby because of it. But it’s back in business now…and I’d forgotten how nicely it cleans.

Anyway, I finally found a good compromise. I use my Shark to pick up all the dog hair (and there is a LOT, because of Dakota,) and do superficial vacuuming, then, if there is a compelling reason to deep vacuum I get the Kirby out and go over them again. Saves me mucho on bags because the Shark gets all the volume stuff.

THEN I have a shop vac and I don’t know what I’d do without it! There are times when nothing but a shop vac will do, like for cleaning out the fireplace, or cleaning in the corners of the ceiling.

I vacuum with the Shark almost every day, and double / triple vac about once a month.

So what are your vacuuming habits?

We have staff for that, but i’ll ask.

I have 3. But in my defense, one only sucks through the hose and the other only works without a hose so it’s really like only having two.

Upstairs: 1 full-size and 1 hand vac
Downstairs: 1 full-size and 1 Dyson stick
I rarely use any of them.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Why not @Pachy?

My husband has a vac upstairs (I forgot about that one) in his office. He never uses it, either. What is up with that?

ragingloli's avatar

I have exactly 1.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Four – Cordless
Two – Robot
Three – Upright
One – Canister
One – Shop Vacuum

Eleven – Total

Dutchess_III's avatar

Seriously? You a collector @Tropical_Willie??

majorrich's avatar

Three, A Kirby, an Oreck and a Shop vac. I have an antique Kirby, but it doesn’t count because the bag doesn’t take a liner and just re-broadcasts the dust all over the place.

Dutchess_III's avatar

So, which do you use the most @majorrich?

Coloma's avatar

Oh man..we are covered here. haha
I have my Miele lightweight hardwood and area rug unit, we have a nice Dyson for the main zone and a cool little robotic Rumba that runs itself around. That’s the best, just program it and let it loose while you have a glass of wine. lol

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

I have one upright, a shop vac and one of those robot thingys

Dutchess_III's avatar

You guys like your robot things? They’re so small. I think one pass at my house and it would choke to death!

majorrich's avatar

I like the Kirby, It’s an older Generation 3 and has that satisfying heavy-metal feel to it, but is self propelled so it is very easy for me to use. My Wife prefers the Oreck because she is a delicate flower and can’t heft the Kirby around. in her defense, it is kind of hefty. We have a family friend that has a Merry Maids franchise and we built this one from spare parts and it works pretty good. I run the Kirby once a week, and She hits traffic areas and cat fur as needed. I think perhaps the Kirby may generate more suction than the Oreck but it is indeed very light and can get into smaller areas the tank can’t.

@ARE_you_kidding_me and @Coloma: Do you guys like the robot vacuums? I am intrigued by the thought of something cleaning my house for me, but am not sure it would be able to handle the cat hair that I have from multiple cats.

chyna's avatar

@jca I’m pretty sure my dog would bark at one of those and probably attack it. Do you think your cats would attack it or run?

jca's avatar

@chyna: I think the cats would freak out.

Dutchess_III's avatar

There is a youtube video of a cat riding on one!

Hey…do they work on carpet, or only hard floors?

Coloma's avatar

@jca

Watch this. They have a bunch of robot vacs running all the time. 14 cats there, maybe more. haha

I moved in with my nephew and his GF last November. I was here for about a week and wanted to vacuum and asked where it was. He said they don’t have one and that they never vacuumed. He had lived here for three fucking years.

I ended up buying one and the canister got filled in about 90 seconds. They had multiple cats. Absolute insanity.

DominicY's avatar

Just one. It’s a Hoover Windtunnel. Since my roommates would never vacuum if I didn’t, I’m the only one who ever uses it. It works pretty well, although when my friend’s girlfriend comes over, she apparently sheds her hair like a cat because the vacuum brush gets clogged with hair every time…

It’s a bagged vacuum cleaner (which I prefer; I’d rather throw a bag away than deal with filters) and it’s intended for carpet (which we have), but the hose extension works well for everything else.

Couldn’t ask, their day off.

I have a Compact that I bought at a yard sale for $10. I tried selling these things years ago and always said if I ever found one at a sale, I’d buy it. Best damn $10 I ever spent! Best vacuum this side of a Rainbow. (Sure, some Kirby’s seem to pick up stuff good but the bags/filters have to be porous to let the air out and so let dust out, too. Compact has bag and filter.) Have a shop vac for other outdoor needs and for use with my drywall sander.

0. Hardwood floors throughout.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

We have 3 a Beam built in ,a meile upright and a shop vac for the vehicles .

cookieman's avatar

Like @dxs, I have all hardwood floors (no area rugs), but I do have a Roomba iRobot Vacuum that keeps all the floors dust, hair, and dirt free.

I love my Roomba. I named her Mildrid.

JLeslie's avatar

4. One regular one and two small ones for the floor and one dust buster type for the cars.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I want a Roomba!

jca's avatar

I’m going to google Roomba on Amazon and read reviews.

jca's avatar

I just looked at Amazon and see there’s a decent Roomba called the 770 for $450. It got good reviews. It’s not the lowest model nor is it the top of the line model. I looked at Kohl’s website, because Kohl’s frequently has 15–30% off coupons for use in conjunction with a Kohl’s charge card. They have the Roomba 760 for $450. Not sure what the reviews are for that one, but good to know it’s competitively priced with Amazon, and if there’s a coupon for 30% off, that would be even better. I’m not purchasing right now as I try not to make impulsive purchases, but it’s good to know so many people gave Roomba good reviews on the Amazon site.

cookieman's avatar

@jca: I’ve had Midrid for about four-five years now. It’s a basic model Roomba (no fancy programming, just an on/off button and the ability to find its way back to the charging station). She is an indestructible workhorse. I give her a good cleaning every third use or so. They’re easy to take apart, clean, and reassemble.

Just this year, I had to order her a new battery (third party from Amazon) as she wasn’t holding a charge very long. Also got replacement brushes and filter while I was there too.

jca's avatar

@cookieman: I googled Roomba Midrid and Roomba Madrid and nothing came up except service centers in Madrid LOL.

JLeslie's avatar

I’ve wanted a Roomba for a long time, but never splurged on it. I had kind of forgotten about it, but now this Q has sparked my interest again.

jca's avatar

I looked at it and am very interested now. Just want to read more reviews to firm up my choice, and then find the best price.

JLeslie's avatar

I think it cost $250 years ago when I was very interested. I can’t believe it’s $450 now? Is that right?

I don’t mind vacuuming, but every time I’m injured it’s one of the things I can’t do. Now that I live in a one story house it’s easier. Vacuuming stairs is the biggest pain, and I assume a Roomba can’t do the stairs. Can it?

cookieman's avatar

@jca: Sorry, typo. I meant “Mildred” — it’s what l named my Roomba.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Well, pretty sure it can’t climb, @JLeslie. I think it just runs into things and randomly changes directions until it runs into something else.

jca's avatar

It can’t go over a threshold of more than one inch. meaning a door saddle or something like that. It can be programmed to stay out of certain areas or rooms. It won’t fall off a ledge or step, or if you have a sunken room or something. (Can you tell I read up about it on Amazon?) :)

Yes, @JLeslie, various models cost from a few hundred to I don’t know how high.

What I like about it is that people say on the reviews that they have it vacuum 3 times a week, so although it probably doesn’t hold much, it is working and being emptied often.

JLeslie's avatar

I vacuum my carpet once a week in rooms I use daily. My floors I swiffer once or twice a week and mop once a week, or once every two weeks depending (more often than not it’s once every two weeks except in the kitchen where I cook the floor might get a quick wipe down more often. I don’t have kids or pets, and right now I live in FL, which has much less dust than living up north. So, cleaning the floors and carpets isn’t that time consuming.
