What does "absent gods" mean?

Asked by cofeka (154points) August 11th, 2015

At 1:31 in this YouTube video (https://youtu.be/CizX9tjDR-k), the man mentioned, “25 apparently deaf, unfeeling, or absent gods you should pray for…”
Does “absent gods” mean the Gods don’t appear (when they should) or the Gods don’t exist?

Also, who is the godfather in Jamaica the man referred to at 2:05?

Gods that do not do anything and do not display their presence.
Which technically includes every god.

It means they are not present, so therefore of no help.

I take it to mean they do exist (otherwise they could not be deaf, unfeeling or absent) they are just not around the neighborhood anymore but they must have been at one time in order to be absent now.

As for the godfather, it could have been Wilmot Perkins, Alton Ellis or Christopher “Dudus” Coke.

Note that this video is from “College Humor – Original” and therefore I doubt that it should be taken seriously.

@Bill1939 Note that @cofeka is involved in some sort of transcription/translation project. It’s not about taking the line seriously, but making a serious effort to get the meaning correct.

Complaining that gods are absent demonstrates misunderstanding what gods are, it seems to me.

Unresponsive.

@Zaku Again, unhelpful as @cofeka is just interested in translating. And you’ll also notice the rather important word “apparently” in the sentence. And that the video is a comedy piece. And that we live in a world where most religious traditions are committed to the idea that whatever gods that exist should not be apparently deaf, unfeeling, or absent.
