Have you ever been surprised that a celebrity is not already dead?

Asked by elbanditoroso (33146points) August 18th, 2015

I was just reading the headlines and say that the actress Maureen O’Hara is celebrating her 95th birthday today.

I was astounded – I thought she died 20 years ago. Who else isn’t dead that might be?

Not sure who but sometimes something will cause me to Google someone and I’ll be surprised that they’re still around.

Olivia de Haviland (Melanie from Gone with the Wind) was born in 1916 and is still alive.

elbanditoroso's avatar

@Pied_Pfeffer – really! Now she’s another one that I thought died 15–20 years ago.

Zsa Zsa was given her “last” rites 5 years ago (when she was 94), and yet the Queen of Outer Space has gone on to outlive Lizzy Taylor, Jimmy Garner, and Laurie Bacall! ;-O

@Brian1946 – I was just reading her biography – 9 husbands…. what a woman!

I was really surprised that Victor Borge and Marcel Marceau weren’t dead before they died.

The guy who played Captain Picard’s archaeology teacher in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
He is literally 100 years old.

Brian1946's avatar

@ragingloli That’s Norman Lloyd, who’ll be 101 on November 8th.

Occasionally I’m surprised that Johnny Carson really is dead. He was such an icon for so long, then a recluse, and I’ve not had TV in 15–20 years.
Seems he should still be lurking somewhere with that smirk on his face.

One day I’ll feel the same about Carol Burnett.

I thought when Ray Milland died, Rosey Grier’s traumatized bod would be unable provide life support for a dead head. ;-o

But much to my surprise, 83-year-old Rosey still lives!

janbb's avatar

Speaking of dead heads, Jerry Garcia should still be alive.

Jimmy Carter is in the news he has brain cancer and cancer in three other parts of his body. I am surprised that he is still alive.

@janbb

He and Mickey Mantle died within 4 days of each other, 20 years ago this month.

Dick Clark finally died.

keobooks's avatar

He’s not too famous anymore, but about 20 years ago someone made this website that does nothing but report the status of Abe Vigoda (Fish on Barney Miller).

I was surprised to find out Harper Lee was still alive.

ibstubro's avatar

Yeah, but Harper Lee’s mental health is much in doubt, @keobooks.
My honey that I’m SO glad to find still in residence!!

I’ve been surprised in the past, when there’s a death notice on a celebrity that I assumed died years ago. The last one that surprised me like that was Burl Ives. When he died, I assumed that he died 20 years earlier.

I can’t link to the article because I’m on the phone, but Yogi Berra died today. I thought he died in the 1970s. I guess it’s a sad day for baseball. But since I had no idea that he was even alive, I don’t feel too sad. That, and I’m not a fan of baseball. I did love the funny things Yogi said, though.

jca's avatar

@keobooks: At the Yankees games, they’d wheel him out at the All Stars and Old Timers games.

This just came up again today at my house.
We were shocked that Charlie Pride is still living, and only 77 yo.

Chuck Berry was mentioned on the radio the other day. Born 1926 and still with us.

ibstubro's avatar

Wow.
I didn’t know Chuck Berry was still alive, too, @jaytkay.

talljasperman's avatar

Hugh Hefner.

Roy Clark.

ibstubro's avatar

Wow! I had to verify that, @jca. Seems like Buck Owens has been gone forever, and he was the skinny one.
