Do you think it's all right for adults to use products designed for children?

Asked by AshlynM (10684points) August 19th, 2015

I don’t mean toys or anything. More like medicine and hair products.I’m including baby products as well. I just recently picked up a 3 in 1 body wash, shampoo and conditioner made for kids. I haven’t checked the ingredients or used the bottle yet. I was wondering if it’s ok for adults to use medicine or other products designed for childrens’ use?

Products designed for kids, probably okay. They may not work as well as other products, but you’ll be able to tell. Medicine, no not unless directed by your doctor. They’re designed for kids, they may not be as effective or have side affects for adults. My doctor advised my to take a baby aspirin daily for heart health. That’s okay, otherwise, I’d err on the side of caution.

Yes, of course. @Adirondackwannabe makes a good point; the chemicals may be less effective, but otherwise fine.

Sort of like everyone back in the ‘70s using baby oil when tanning? Or some people eating baby food to snack on?

Other than medical potency, there really isn’t a reason to not use it, except the product is designed to be enjoyed by children, like bubble gun flavored toothpaste.

For anything except prescription medication it should be fine.

If I’m having dental work done or tooth problems, I’ll eat baby food. It makes perfect sense to me, plus it doesn’t have tons of added sugar and salt the way a lot of other stuff does.

Plus it’s great for helping to swallow pills which I need to crush into powder. I just put it between two layers of baby food on the spoon and down the hatch.

For you, I see no reason why a child’s shampoo product wouldn’t be fine. And it probably has a nicer scent as well.

As my grandmother would say “There’s no crime against it.”

Adults use baby shampoo, powder and lotion all the time. I don’t, because I can’t stand the smell, but I will purchase other brands of children’s products like soap, as long as it doesn’t have “baby” smell.

Totally agree with those who say it’s generally okay. I used to eat Gerber’s vanilla baby custard until, for some unknown reason, it was discontinued. In many cases, labelling products for babies is more about marketing than age appropriateness.

Sure, you might just have to take a larger dose of say, baby aspirin, but all other products are fine. I use baby wipes to freshen up on occasion and also to wipe down my pets sometimes. I also use animal products like a 3 in one antibiotic ointment for dogs and horses with a bonus fly barrier. lol
I also use veterinary Betadine for minor wounds.

It won’t burn when it gets in your eyes. Pretty nice benefit if you ask me.

I agree with most of what’s been posted. Especially if you’re a little more sensitive to adult products.

@Coloma _ I also use animal products like a 3 in one antibiotic ointment for dogs and horses with a bonus fly barrier_ This reminds me of Watkins Petro-Carbolic Salve. We used to have a tin in the medicine chest when I was growing up. I remember it said “for man or beast!”

@Coloma You remind me of an old roomate I had, who was an Athletic Trainer for a local college. He grew up on a cattle ranch in Wyoming; 30 years ago he was the only Certified Athletic Trainer in Northern California that carried Bag Balm in his medical kit.

Of course it’s all right. The fun of being an adult is to be the child you always wanted to be while being the responsible adult society expects you to be.

Each time I had a baby, the hospital would give me a gift pack for the baby, and say the lotion, oil, and powder should not be used on babies because it gives some of them skin problems later. They said I could just use them myself if I want. When doctors prescribe aspirin for heart trouble, it is often the baby aspirin which is recommended. When I was young, and had just my first, I got a nasty cold, and realized I had medicine only for the baby. I called the doctor, and asked about it. He gave me an adjusted dosage. It was so much though, the next day I was able to get out and had to buy both for me, and the baby, because I used it all up in one night.
No need to be afraid. Just, with medications, ask a doctor for a correct dosage.

Just one instance: there is a baby immunization which is a more powerful dose for infants and could be dangerous given to an adult. There is no one size fits all answer.

Sure. I’ve been dying to get one of those backpacks that you can color in with Sharpies but unfortunately they only come in small kids’ sizes.

If it serves the purpose, a person is entitled to use a thing for whatever he wants to use it for DESPITE it being marketed to a specific consumer or intended for a specific purpose.

“Noxema” is a moisturizing cleaning cream intended for use on one’s skin, but I use it to hydrate and hold my hair in place.

Whatever works.
