What do you think about the Tesla Model X?

Asked by gorillapaws (30512points) September 30th, 2015

Tesla just released the first few production versions of it’s new all-electric Model X crossover SUV. Here’s the video of the event. They’re only shipping the top-end versions at the moment, but will be shipping the more affordable (with smaller batteries) version later.

What do you think? Is it cool? Sexy? Stupid? If you were fabulously wealthy, would you consider buying one?

It is quite ugly, actually.
Especially the face.

Hey loli… Don’t you talk shit on Mac users for buying pretty things?

As for the Tesla.. I would totally buy one if I could afford it. We have pretty cheap electricity here.

@johnpowell
No, I give them shit for buying overpriced machines out of pure brand slavery that are no better than non-apple machines that cost ⅓ as much as a mac.

I’m not digging it very much. I think the doors opening to an up position will be too unusual for a lot of people, although I see how it would make getting in and out easier. I have a hell of a time getting into cars negotiating the swing of the door. Especially, when getting into the driver’s seat, but I think those doors are only for the back seats.

I just want a normal looking car with gas saving (planet saving) technology. When Toyota introduced the Prius I said the same thing. Why do people have to drive cars that look like tree higher cars when they want to save the planet and not be dependent in oil?

I can’t wait to own this or its successors. Zero emissions. Fast. Utile. Beautiful. Tesla wins.

Disclaimer: I’m not fabulously wealthy, but I think running the numbers on this baby against its fossil-fuel-consuming, maintenance-dependent cousins will be an interesting exercise.

@JLeslie yes, the falcon-wing doors are only for the back seats. The idea was to make accessing the 3rd row easier, and also limit back injuries when putting children in car seats. Elon Musk talks about them in the video at about 15 minutes in.

To my eye, when the doors are closed, I don’t think it looks all that unusual compared to other crossovers.

I think it is a beautiful car, and the performance seems way beyond just about any street legal machine at the same or lower price.

The doors are designed with sensors so they don’t bang open on a car parked next to them. The driver door opens when you unlock from the key fob, and closes automatically when you step on the brake.

Yet it is being touted as the Tesla SUV. I don’t see anything utility about it; it certainly is not designed for taking off road in the Rockies to get to your campsite.

A bit large for my tastes, but I can see how it could appeal to some.

@zenvelo I think that it’s 5,000 pound towing capacity is rather utilitarian. Same for the capacity; seating up to seven adults while still having some cargo space (more than a normal car) is enough to take it over the line between car and SUV. Consider the less capable Ford Escape and Rav4 are also SUVs, I’d say that the Model X is in the same category. Now, whether any of them are “utility” is another matter.

I like it.
No more an SUV than a Lexus RX 350 though.
Still, pretty cool looking.

^Good looking matters when it comes to cars
