Where is the line between insanity and creativity?

Asked by Morocco (189points) October 16th, 2015

And can insanity bring on more creativity?
I personally think there are different levels of insanity. However it is typical to find really creative people with high IQ’s suffering from a mental illness. What do you say?

There isn’t a line, so much as a gradual overlap. Some of the most intelligent people I know suffer from depression. I know many examples of brilliant people with close families with autism. Many brilliant artists are in and out of treatment for various mental illnesses their whole lives.

Creativity and intelligence are often the result of neural networks that vary significantly from the general population, allowing thought patterns that don’t come as easily to the rest of the population. But there’s a good reason evolution hasn’t made us all like that, because these networks are often associated with other risks.

I agree that there is no ‘line’ between insanity and creativity. They overlap.

Personally, I think the same can often be said about leadership and insanity/self destructiveness.
Think Mark Sanford.

There is a pretty thick line between them.
Creatitivity is the ability to imagine things that are not real.
Insanity is believing that the imaginary things are real.

It’s been said that Insanity and Genius are on opposite sides of the same piece of paper. I suppose creativity could be a form of genius. But then again, that’s only what the voices in my head are telling me.

As long as you don’t slice off your own ear in a fit of painting passion, it’s all good. lol

You ask about whether insanity can bring on creativity. There have been numerous accounts of people with bipolar disorder who go off their meds because they say that it damps down their creative spark. That’s a very unfortunate choice for someone to have to make.

Insanity isn’t a medical term, it’s a legal defense.

There is a mental wormhole- like those in outer space. The artistic geniuses have such a wormhole where real life blahs get drawn in the wormhole vortex stretched into the beautiful artistic, musical, or otherwise creative world of inspiration and heightened emotions. It’s the wormhole itself that brings the pain, and differences, and the unfortunate synapse misfirings of genius causing various lifelong conditions.
