How does your dog tell you to stop doing what you're doing?

Asked by longgone (19537points) October 17th, 2015

Most dogs don’t love getting bathed, having their nails clipped, or having wounds looked at.

How does your dog tell you to stop it? Does he whine, turn his head, tongue-flick? Does he growl or snap? Does he try to escape?

Do you notice different “degrees” of the same message, such as a warning stare followed by a growl?

If you are referring to situations where my dog may not like or want to do what needs to get done….she learned early on she has no choice in the matter. Oddly she does not like baths and does everything in her power to get out of getting one, but after I towel her off you have never seen a happier dog running and jumping all over the house.

My dog doesn’t like having his nails clipped. It’s sort of a power struggle. He constantly pulls his paws out of your hand. I have a second person near with a handful of treats, which laser focuses his attention on them.

My Jack Russell is actually very clear with her appeasement signals even down to the subtle ones like tongue flicking and yawning. If she is really unhappy she will grumble (I wouldn’t call it a growl).

Well, Frodo kind of bit people when he didn’t like what was going on.

@Cruiser Maybe she just gets the Zoomies and is actually relieving stress? That’s what my sister’s dog does after getting a bath, though she sure looks happy.

@marinelife That’s what my old girl is like when I have to do something which causes her pain. She also does a lot of head-turning, and her tongue flicks in and out.

@ZEPHYRA Oh dear!

@OpryLeigh Amy just did that grumbling, when I picked her up. We’re worried that she’s in pain, because she also seems to be walking weirdly. Taking her to the vet tomorrow.

@janbb You made me snort, and now the dogs are looking at me, all concerned.

@longgone Well, at least he didn’t sugarcoat things. I do miss that little monster though.

Back when I was a kid, my cousin’s dog told me to stop petting him by biting me in the head.

@longgone Oh no! Let me know how It goes at the vets, hope Amy’s just being a bit grumpy!
