Do the Cubs have to win the World Series to break the billy goat curse, or is it broken just by making it there?

They lost the World Series in ‘45 because of the goat. They lost the NLCS in ‘69 because of a black cat.

They have to win it all to be clear.

curses do not exist.

Baseball is special. Especially Cubs baseball. The ability of the Chicago Cubs to fuck up is legendary.

I wrote that haiku after the Red Sox had won the final game of the 2004 World Series.

I don’t believe in curses, but stigma can be a real nuisance. The embarrassment and discomfort don’t go away just because a team takes the pennant; the team needs to win it all. It’s so GREAT when a loyal fan can no longer be teased, mocked, or provoked, no matter how good-natured such behavior might be.

Here’s to the Cubs and a 2015 world championship!

I’ve been a cubs fan since I was about 3… since we only had WGN on the antenna.

While there is no such thing as a curse.. winning will break a lot of negative notions about the team.

Yes, they need to win the whole thing.

And if they make it to the series they should bring a goat to Wrigley for the first game there.

@Apparently_Im_The_Grumpy_One I live across the river from Washington, DC. For many years, my local cable service carried WGN. I have no idea why; Chicago certainly isn’t in the neighborhood! This was the first time I’d ever had steady access to N.L. games, so I really enjoyed watching regularly. I became very fond of the Cubs.

@zenvelo – only if they sacrifice it on an altar to Harry Caray before the game.

Sorry about your so called curse but the jays are going to take it,we can’t seem to get the stanlycup back,so guess we will have to settle for the world series.

@Seek the black cat issue has been settled. The Cubs have been kicking ass since Kris Bryant adopted a black cat last year.

However, the goat curse HAS NOT been lifted. If the Cubs are in the series, a goat MUST be allowed into the park.

I will be working in upcoming days to procure some goats (one is sufficient but we need backup).

I am not kidding.

@jaytkay “I am not kidding.”

I tip my hat and give you the Pun Of The Day award.

@SQUEEKY2 Ok, Canada, knock it off! You already live in the world’s most beautiful country and have universal health care, paid vacations, retirement pensions, good education, and a rational income tax system. Do you really need to take the World Series trophy?!?!

But seriously, I’m cheering for Toronto in the A.L. Maybe tomorrow’s travel day, plus the return home, will help the Jays recalibrate.

@Love_my_doggie The pun was unintended.

I am telling friends with money that we have to take a goat to Wrigley.

Lost a pitching duel tonight… but Arrieta is pitching tomorrow night (swoon!), so I’m looking forward to it.

@Love_my_doggie I grew up in California.. and somehow that’s what we got. To this day I have no explanation.

The reason you got WGN in D.C. and California is because WGN (along with TBS) was one of the first so-called “superstations” – that is local stations (as opposed to a cable-only network) to broadcast nationwide (generally via uplink to cable/home satellite carriers).

Cubs/goat trivia:

The guy who cursed the Cubs for not allowing his pet goat into Wrigley was Billy Goat Tavern owner Billy Sianis. Taking the goat around town was Sianis’s habitual publicity stunt.

The Billy Goat Tavern is more famous as the inspiration for the Saturday Night Live “cheezborger, cheezborger” sketch.

The original place is pretty much like the sketch. They play it up, yelling “cheezborger” for laughs, but the place remains as it has been for decades. They haven’t redecorated since opening in 1964.

I’m pretty sure the curse and the Billy Goat Tavern pre-date 1964 by nearly a couple of decades.

Yes. The goat happened in 1945.

From wiki
“You are going to lose this World Series and you are never going to win another World Series again. You are never going to win a World Series again because you insulted my goat.” Whatever the truth, the Cubs were up two games to one in the 1945 Series, but ended up losing Game 4, as well as the best-of-seven series, four games to three. The curse was immortalized in newspaper columns over the years, particularly by syndicated columnist Mike Royko”

The sign in front of the Billy Goat Tavern says it opened in ‘34.
