Do you remember the last time you ate a Pop-Tart, and perhaps the flavor?

Asked by ibstubro (18804points) October 27th, 2015

Kellogg’s announced they’re be putting out 5 new Pop-Tart flavors, and it made me wonder, “When’s the last time I ate a Pop-Tart?” I honestly can’t remember.

We loved them when I was a kid, but I confess that I only liked the frosted ones (cinnamon brown sugar was awesome!), and only if I took a butter knife (after toasting) and broke up then entire frosting layer and filled all the cracks with butter.

My memory, however, is of Pop-Tarts tasting vaguely like flavored cardboard. Even then I had to be desperate to eat one cold.

Pop the top on a cold one and lets talk Tarts!

Gailcalled chastised me for eating them for dinner about 3 years ago. She told me they had no redeeming nutritional value and to stop eating them. I did.
They do taste like cardboard.

Chocolate frosted, maybe 5 years ago. They are SO bad for you, but they taste so good.

Cold…frozen is best.Never hot.

I ate a blueberry one about forth years ago, while backpacking. One must be very hungry to eat one of those things.

Strawberry in desperation a few years back. I threw mine in the toaster, but I’ve seen people devour them straight out of the package.

It’s been about 40 years. When they first came out, we were allowed to eat one along with a glass of Tang. The frosted cinnamon were my favorite. The last one I recall eating was fudge filled, and that was so bad that it knocked me off of them for life.

Probably 6 months ago. It was either chocolate with white frosting (I think it might be called cookies and cream) or the classic brown sugar cinnamon with frosting flavor.

I don’t buy them and I don’t eat them. Even when I was little, I think we bought them once because I was curious. Once was one time too many.

Whatever that purple one with yellow zigzags on it was, that one. It was years ago and I miss it.

S’mores, I think. A few months ago. I don’t eat them often but sometimes Ian will split a pack with me.

I know they’re crap, but it’s a cheap snack – and a calorie is a calorie no matter how empty.

Centuries ago, at least. I used to adore the blueberry ones, which I would toast and then butter. But the frosting—revolting. Ever since they put frosting on them, I haven’t had anything to do with them. Can’t buy the plain ones any more. If I could, I might have a blueberry one once every year or so, just for the sake of it.

Trader Joe’s sells a variation. I know I saw pumpkin ones there a few days ago. I should get them, just out of curiosity. I think the box said something like “It’s like pumpkin pie in a bar!”

For some unknown reason, I never found them to be the least bit appealing even as a kid.

My go-to afterschool snack for years was a glass of milk to accompany peanut butter and jelly spread on hot buttered toast and swirled all together with the knife; all in all a delicious goopy mess.

The pop tarts always seemed like dry cardboard by comparison. Not the least bit delicious or appealing in any way.

I used to love me some Pop Tarts when I was a little kid, especially the strawberry ones with no frosting, with butter melting all over the front of it. I didn’t eat them again until about 3 or 4 years ago, when I had one (just one) that had a brown sugar filling and white frosting. It was sooooooo good.

I don’t eat them now, because they are so bad for you. I don’t recall thinking they tasted like cardboard. I loved them. Trader Joe’s has their own brand of Pop Tart-like pastries that are very good and have somewhat better Ingredients in them. I like them, but I don’t indulge in many sweets and I don’t recall the last time I had one of those.

As a kid. The cherry flavor or strawberry, before they came out with the frosted Pop tart. I know we didn’t get them till I was in my teens. My mom cooked breakfast for us every morning and pop tarts wasn’t really considered a meal. It was a fun snack. I was never overly fond of them. I found them too sweet. When they came out with the frosted ones, I really didn’t like it.

I’ve eaten some crap in my life but not this particular crap

I don’t think I had a pop tart until my 20’s. I eat them rarely. Sometimes I buy them to bring on a long driving trip, or as dessert in lieu of some other sort of something sweet.

Blueberry, unfrosted, toasted. About twenty years ago.

I was never a Pop-Tart guy, but last month, lured by one of my favorite flavors, I tried one with pumpkin filling. Big mistake—it was awful. But of course I ate every one in the package.

jca's avatar

@Pachy: Was it from Trader Joe’s?

JLeslie's avatar

@jca Why does the store matter?

cookieman's avatar

Alton Brown of the Food Network made homemade Pop Tarts once.

jca's avatar

@JLeslie: Because I wrote this above and I’m curious:

ibstubro's avatar

Wow. I’m surprised so many of my fellow jellies shared a taste for the brown sugar and cinnamon.

I’ll check the ones out at Trader Joe’s. Are they shelf stable? I doubt I’d buy them…if I want some sort of that crap I’ll buy Toaster Strudels.

Life is too short to make your own Pop-Tarts. IMO.

JLeslie's avatar

@jca I didn’t think in terms of some stores not carrying that flavor. That makes sense.

Edit: If you don’t find them you could call customer service and ask where they are sold. Here is the website.

Pachy's avatar

@jca, no—it was from 7–11, not what you’d call a leader in fine culinary products. Perhaps Trader Joe’s would have been a better choice…

jca's avatar

I am not a pop-tarts fan (as I explained above). I envision them being very sweet. However, I know TJ’s has good stuff, so I’m going to buy a box and report.

Someone on here recommended I buy TJ’s Speculoos Cookie Butter, which I did. I didn’t open it yet. I am probably going to bring it to someone’s house when I’m invited, so I can have some and then leave it there.

Buttonstc's avatar

@jca

That was me recommending the cookie butter from TJ because I’m curious to see what the texture is like compared to Biscoff which I currently have.

:)

I have only attempted to eat a Pop-Tart once. It came out of the toaster looking like a square of dirty cardboard. When I cut open the top a nasty luminous red liquid oozed out. It seemed to be at around 1500 degrees Celsius. Taste you say?

Pachy's avatar

Best description of a Pop-Tart ever, @flutherother!

ibstubro's avatar

Here from the 2007 intro, @JLeslie.

I think that’s the product @jca was referring to.

I might even be tempted to try them.

JLeslie's avatar

^^I think I misunderstood. Pop-Tarts is a brand. When someone asks about Pop-Tarts I’m thinking actual Pop-Tarts, unless they say they are talking about other toaster pastries. Does @jca want to know where the pumpkin Pop-Tarts are sold? Or, a different brand of Pumpkin toaster pastries like TJ’s private label?

JLeslie's avatar

Yes, I saw the link.

jca's avatar

@JLeslie: I know the pumpkin ones are at TJ’s. I’m not terribly interested in any of them but will try TJ’s just because they usually have a decent product.

dxs's avatar

This is the one I was talking about. I want one really bad now. But just one, not a whole box.

ibstubro's avatar

It’s very visually appealing, @dxs! lol

Seek's avatar

I remember when those first came out. It was a very exciting commercial for an early 90s kid.

FeelTheBern's avatar

I had one this morning, brown sugar cinnamon, straight out of the package.
They’re good if you’re in a rush. Grab one and eat it on the way to school.
Unhealthy, but temporary pleasure—if you like them.

longgone's avatar

About two months ago, for the first and likely last time.

OpryLeigh's avatar

It was strawberry and I think it was about three weeks ago.

I’m aware that they are bad for me but they’re also a bit of a guilty pleasure and one here and there isn’t going to hurt!
