Does this sound like Hay Fever?

Asked by tan253 (2948points) November 19th, 2015

It’s spring time where I live, I’ve lived in America for 5 years and never got Hay Fever and now Im living in NZ and suddenly every morning I wake up blocked, headache, sore eyes, fatigue and occasional sneezes. It stays with me till the afternoon and then it goes again but comes back in the morning. I think it sounds like hay fever, I don’t think I have a cold as everything else feels fine and I never have snot. ;) Just itchy eyes, fatigue behind my eyes, cloudy/foggy head feeling, and stuffy nose. Thoughts? I live in an area where there are kiwi fruit orchards as well and a huge reservoir near my house so the wind blows all the pollen, sprays etc my way!

Sounds like sinusitis to me. Try having some chili or mustard (whichever you prefer) and do your best to keep your nose and nasal passages clear / clean.

Seeing a doctor about this wouldn’t be unreasonable.

sinusitis is an infection though correct? Wouldn’t I have a fever or something else with it?
Would hayfever medication help?

Your sinuses can become infected but generally sinusitis refers to the build up of liquid in your sinus passages. This can cause headache and other symptoms you mentioned. It’s common in my family.

If you think your sinuses are infected then you should see a doctor. S/he may prescribe an antibiotic.

I was on antibiotics for a sinus infection about 3 weeks ago but this cleared and now suddenly I’m waking up all stuffy and tired again! Just booked a time – I think allergies might be the culprit – it’s frustrating as it affects my voice as well – makes me sound croaky and have a shaky voice!

When I moved across the U.S. from Massachusetts to California in springtime, I had a terrible time with allergies. In fact, I had a very dangerous attack of asthma—something I’d never had before. My doctor said that I was exposed to a whole new set of allergens because of the various plants around here that I wasn’t used to. I’d always had some hay fever as a young person, but nothing like what happened to me here.

Eventually I signed up for an allergy test and then allergy shots, and they changed my life. Nearly twenty years later, I still go for maintenance shots every 4 to 6 weeks, and they are totally worth it.

P.S. One of the things I was allergic to was feathers, so no more down pillows for me. That was one reason why I woke up congested every morning.

I might try that too, from your experience @Jeruba does what I’m experiencing sound like hayfever to you?
Dr’s are hard here, they just label it hayfever – when it might not be.

Wondering how hard I should push for more tests etc if it could possibly be sinusitis!
It’s miserable, makes me grumpy – mainly mornings then clears up again afternoon, only to wake up in the morning with it.
Right now I“m sniffing and have post nasal drip, my eyes are itchy and sore, and I’m coughing new to the post nasal drip – I’m constantly sniffing too and clearing my throat!

@tan253 I’m not qualified to give medical advice, and none of us can diagnose you from online posts. All I can tell you with certainty is what I learned from my own experience.

tan253's avatar

That’s ok – as i always say I“m not looking for medical advice, I’m quite intelligent and realise this isn’t a consultation room – I’m merely looking for similar experiences too help me figure out what is most likely – without it being from a DR…. x

Sounds like it could be hay fever or an allergy to something in your bedroom if it started when you first moved in.

True hay fever is seasonal and doesn’t usually ebb and wane throughout the day as you describe. Your description is IMO more fitting towards an allergy reaction to something in your home. People exposed to mold, dust mites, chemicals in the home etc. report symptoms as you have and that you seem to clear up during the day…where I assume you are out of the house and it returns after a nights sleep, which leads me to believe there might be something in your house that you are reacting to.

Take note if you ever spend a night or two away from your house to see if you suffer the same in the morning.

I spent the night away last night and woke up stuffy too…. If i take hayfever medication it clears – makes me think that may be hayfever causing it – good advice though @Cruiser. Dr’s on Tuesday will ask her.
