Shoes similar to the Nike Air 2015?

Asked by DrasticDreamer (23996points) November 30th, 2015

Because of a bulging disc that I just found out about not too long ago, my chiropractor highly recommended that I get a pair of Nike Air Max, because it lessens heel impact. However, I’m not sure I feel like spending $130—$150 on shoes. So, if anyone here knows of any really high quality alternatives that has firsthand experience, I’d really like to hear what you have to say.

If you also have experience with Nike Airs, can you tell me if they’re worth the money? Did they help with back pain? Hurting feet? Anything?

Because of my recent hypothyroidism diagnosis, exercising is an absolute must, but when my bulging disc acts up (twice now), it stops me from exercising and living a normal life in general because it’s excrutiating. So, I need a shoe that is actually capable of absorbing shock when I walk 5 miles a day.

Any help is very much appreciated!

I buy new Balance and they are comfortable year round. They cost $119.

New Balance are the gold standard for spine alignment I think. They analyze your feet and tell you which sneaker will straighten you out. It helped my dad a lot. For me, it felt a little odd wearing the sneakers they recommended for me. I guess I like being crooked. I have owned their sneakers though, and liked them very much. They are one of the few that have a large array of width sizes, especially wide widths, which can be hard to find.

Also, maybe a pediatrist can make you shoe inserts? Or, try the drug store ones. They have machines in some drug stores that analyze your feet and tell you what to buy.

Where is the disk?

@JLeslie It’s C6 and it started happening immediately after I significantly ramped up my walking and exercising. The reason I’m so hesitant to spend that much on another pair of shoes is because I just got a really great pair of Merrel’s (most comfortable shoes ever!) not too long ago, which weren’t cheap. But my chiro is insisting that I need a shoe with a really cushy heel, or exactly like the Nike Air Max. Do any New Balance shoes have anything like that specifically?

I’m not sure. New Balance has a lot of options. For instance I wear out the heal of my shoes on the outside corners, so that indicates how I stand, and they have sneakers specifically made for that. They might also have cushy heal options, I really don’t know. I love my Merrel’s also. I bought Clark’s this past summer and they are awesome too.

Do you feel pain in your shoulder from it?

DrasticDreamer's avatar

When my disc is acting up, the pain radiates up my neck and out both sides.

I get really bad pain in my shoulder and upper back mainly on one side. I don’t remember which discs are my problem. I have two messed up in my neck from an accident.

Resting with neck support helps me, but it’s interesting to me walking and standing bothers your neck like that. I’m going to try to pay attention to whether that’s part of what happens to me.

@JLeslie Yeah, keep an eye out for any repetitive and/or jarring movement, since that’s one of the biggest triggers.

Zumba bothers my shoulder. I can’t do a lot of stuff in my left side. I also have to be careful how I sleep. Vitamin D helps me with muscular things, and the pain is likely a combination of the disc and muscles. Every little but helps. Magnesium spray helps when the pain is minor.
