Do you have any inviolable holiday traditions?

Asked by Hawaii_Jake (37334points) December 7th, 2015

It is not Christmas season at my house, until I play Barbra Streisand’s first Christmas album. Playing that album signals the festivities to commence. This is sacrosanct.

I have not played it yet this year.

What about you?

Wife is already playing Bab’s Christmas album. We will probably will have fish and shellfish for Christmas eve dinner.

Tree. Shortbread cookies. Pulling out all my new wave Christmas mixtapes. A Muppet Family Christmas (look out for the icy patch).

We’ve had a number of traditions that I’ve tried to preserve over the years, but they all turned out to be violable.

My sister and I make one or more homemade Christmas ornaments every year.

@elbanditoroso “Usually” does not sound convincing.
@dappled_leaves I am a fanatic for shortbread.
@Jeruba I have only the one inviolable tradition, and no one else cares about it.
@DrasticDreamer That sounds fun.

Making the Glug on Christmas eve. The simmering brew on the stove soon fills the air with the smell of cinnamon, clove and nutmeg and signals the start of Christmas celebration.

@Cruiser Glug? Is that vin chaud, gluwein, mulled wine? I learned to make that from a French woman, and later a South African woman taught me her way. I used to make it annually in my drinking days. It’s good.

@Hawaii_Jake It is made with Port Wine, Bourbon, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, raisins and sliced almonds. Simmer on the stove add a little sugar for more sweetness and serve warm.

Sounds wonderful. Enjoy!
