How has spellcheck improved from the first version?

I missed the multi-mate version that gave you explanations for different words. Has spellcheck improved from the past 20 years?

Honestly, is there only one version of spellcheck?
I don’t think there is, but I could be wrong. I’m using Firefox and I don’t think the spellcheck is as good as it was on IE.
Mine pretty much bites, IMO. I get misspelled words all the time that come up with a ridiculous alternative. Yet, if I highlight it and ask Google I always get the word I was looking for, no matter how far off the make I was.
