How do they know what color Ethel's dress was?

“Nature” was boring so I flipped over to an “I Love Lucy Christmas Special” to watch until “Nova” comes on at 8…..... “I Love Lucy” is in color! .... How did they know that Ethel’s dress was purple? Or was it? Did they just make up a color to make it?

When I see Saturday Night Live acts like Molly Shannon as Mary Katherine Gallagher or Kristen Wiig in lots of skits, I think “they watched Lucy!!”

Most likely it was an educated guess that was easy to be colorized.

Black and white TV was often filmed on sets and costumes that would contrast well in b&w. When I was a kid, I saw a taping of “To Tell The Truth” that was broadcast only in b&w. I was shocked that the sets were a garish orange and white combination, and many of the clothes, especially the suits men wore, were ugly.
