Do I want to buy a modded Amazon Fire stick?

Asked by Buttonstc (27605points) January 12th, 2016

So I was browsing around Craigslist and came upon an ad that was selling these.

I’m not even sure how they work or where you attach them; to a tablet, to a TV or to computer?

Anyhow, they claim you’ll be able to get any TV program or movies for free.

Has anyone heard about this? I’m curious.

Yes, you do. They’re pretty cool. First became popular in Great Britain, but they’re nifty little toys.

What price are they asking on Criaglist? If it’s reasonable, it’s cool.

I know all about these.

First, do not buy the one in the email you sent me. They cost 40 bucks from Amazon and the re-seller have simply installed Kodi (free open source software) and installed a few plug-ins. 30 minutes of work tops.

Note that all this free content comes from mostly illegal sources. So you do run the risk of of you ISP flipping the fuck out. But if you use a VPN it will mitigate that risk. But hit me up. I can help you out if you want to go this route. And don’t get the stick, get the real fire tv box. 99 bucks from Amazon and much faster and with 4K.

@elbanditoroso They want 150

I use Kodi at home. Definitely take @johnpowell up on his offer. My uncle set mine up and it took about 20 minutes. NOT worth a $110 upcharge.

Thanks guys. I’m so glad I checked with my beloved Fluther Geeks :)

Re:companies flipping out. Does it make a difference if its cable vs. satellite? We have DirecTv if that makes any difference.

In the second link I sent you I’m pretty sure it was for the box you mentioned but I’ll double check it.

It’s been awhile since i’ve used craigslist it’s interesting to see what I missed.

When I lived in Philly, cl was a daily (or more) stop for me. I snagged some really good free stuff too.

But that was a more compact area that I was more familiar with than here around Detroit. Most times in Pa. no longer than a 20 min. drive away.

Anyhow, I’ve got to find a decent sized matte screen TV before I even consider what to hook up to it.

@johnpowell

In the second link I sent you I noticed the Plex logo implying that one can hook up the TV to it presumably ? That would beat watching everything on a tablet or phone.

So many decisions :)

@DrasticDreamer

I barely have a clue so I’ll let the experts handle it.

I was a little hesitant to ask about this but now I’m glad I did.

Free learnin’ fer everbody :D

@DrasticDreamer :: Kodi is a media center thing. Here it is on my Apple TV…

You can stream from local network share (what I am doing in these images) or use legally questionably sources.

The ATV also does Plex that ties into my server… And Netflix and a ton of other stuff.

I’m pretty sure I’m using one of the questionable ones

@Seek

That’s OK we won’t tell. Your secret is safe with just us little jellies on this obscure little Internet lagoon :)

Is it a bad idea to download it to my computer?
