Are the Academy Awards racist or are people just whinning cause they didn't get nominated this year?

Asked by somewomenarenicemaybe (332points) January 22nd, 2016

I think award shows are all b.s. anyway, but racist?I don’t know.
It’s not like no African American ever won an Oscar or something.

Rich, privileged people whining. I could not care less.

Pretty much the least important thing in the world, and honestly, it’s just people playing the race card because they can, not because they care about equality.

I don’t watch enough movies to even know what they are talking about.
I think it’s people whinning. Why would Jada Smith choose now to complain when her husband wasn’t chosen for an award and not last year when there were no blacks chosen then either?

Welcome to Fluther.

It’s symptomatic of the Hollywood system as a whole. It’s racist and misogynistic.

I will see the gowns online, which is the only thing I really care about. I will not watch the presentation of awards. Being a retired drag queen, the gowns are by far the most important point of the evening.

Systemic racism is real. If you can’t see that, you are blinded by your own privilege.

The academy voters are mostly old white men. 93% white and 76% male.

That has to affect their voting.

Imagine if the academy were all women. Or 93% African American. Of course they would not make the same choices.

Yep whining. Too bad there were no black nominees, maybe, just maybe, could it be that the black actors were just crappy in the projects they worked in this year? If you’re a crappy actor you’re a crappy actor, has nothing to do with race.

There are tons of white actors and actresses who have never received Oscars.

Ten of the twenty actors nominated this year were born outside of the US. Maybe there’s an anti-American bias. (said in jest, taken from article in NY Post, Friday, ½2/16).

Winning should be based on good acting not your race.

Are we also going to have Oscars for people according to their religion ?. Where does this madness all end.?

Sorry I am black but I think sometimes people are stirring up race talk too much okay.

To be honest I don’t even watch many movies so I don’t care. I think the HOllywood industry is a mess at the moment. Most of the movies coming out of HOllywood are crap , so maybe it is a blessing that you don’t win an Oscar.

Also of the people that win an Oscar how many of them do you actually hear about again ??

As far as I know the most famous actors in the world never won an Oscar

I even remember watching an episode of Antiques where someone put their Oscar up for Auction.

Who cares.

If you are good it will be reflected in other ways.

These silly awards are not important.

IT is like having a degree. It doesn’t guarantee success in life.

Most movies have mainly white people because they are written by white people for white people , depicting white people lives.

That is just the way it is.

e.g Harrison Ford, Tom Cruse, Brad Pitt and Leonardo Di Caprio never won one and they are all good successful actors.

Who cares? Why define yourself by a fake bronze statue.

FYI

Succesful actors that have never won an Oscar

http://www.imdb.com/list/ls057453867/

These are some of the best actors that changed hollywood . So as I said above. Who cares? They certainly don’t

Maybe we need some Oscars affirmative action—fill those race quotas!

To say the Oscars are rigged in today’s society against Blacks would be somewhat disingenuous. There have been Black actors and actresses that were nominated and won:
• 1558 Sidney Poitier The Defiant Ones, nominated.
• 1963 Sidney again Homer Smith, won.
• 1970 James Earl Jones The Great White Hope, nominated
• 1972 Paul Winfield Sounder, nominated.
• 1986 Dexter Gordon Round Midnight, nominated.
• 1989 Morgan Freeman Driving Miss Daisy, nominated.
• 1992 Danzel Washington Malcolm X, nominated.
• 1993 Laurence Fishbourn What’s Love Got to Do with It?, nominated.
• 1994 Morgan again The Shawshank Redemption, nominated.
• 1900 Danzel again The Hurricane, nominated.
• 2001 Danzel again Training Day, won! (Halle Berry won best actress for Monster’s Ball, holy smokes Bullwinkle, it was a “Black Out”)
• 2001 Will Smith Ali, nominated. (What, two Black male nominees in the same year? Shut the front door!)
• 2004 Jamie Foxx Ray, won.
• 2004 Don Cheadle Hotel Rwanda, nominated. (Say what, two Black actors for best actor with ONE winning, someone needs to be hog whipped) ~~
• 2005 Terrence Howard Hustle & Flow, nominated.
• 2006 Foresr Whitaker Last King of Scotland, won.
• 2006 Will Smith again The Pursuit of Happiness, nominated. (ummm….three years in a row for Black nominees and two wins in three years….there is certainly sleeping racist that need to be awaken somewhere) ~~
• 2009 Morgan again Invictus, nominated.
• 2012 Danzel again Flight, nominated.

I don’t think we need to go through supporting actors and best actress and supporting actress, let’s instead talk about how many Caucasian Heisman Trophy winners there has been since 1960. (Oh snap! I guess college football is looking pretty racist) ~~

@Hypocrisy_Central That’s it in a nutshell.

XOIIO's avatar

I love how nobody brings up the black entertainment awards either. I think it’s racist that no whites have been nominated.

Silence04's avatar

Wow.

Are you also upset there is no white history month?

XOIIO's avatar

Yes, there should totally be a white appreciation month, that’s totally not using an extreme to justify people playing the race card with whatever excuse they can get.

Coloma's avatar

I think there should be left handed, right brained blondes appreciation month. I’ll be the founding mother.

Silence04's avatar

@XOIIO Are you implying your Black Entertainment Awards comment is not extreme? Because it is.

Why do you think it exist in the first place? (Hint: it’s the same reason there is no dedicated white history month, there are already 12 of them.)
