What is the most important political issue?

Asked by AdventureElephants (1412points) February 1st, 2016 from iPhone

In choosing a candidate, what is the most important political issue deciding your vote?

Healthcare reform? Immigration issues? Supreme Court nominations? Foreign policy? Terrorism? Gun control? Something else?

Please touch on why. I need to hear opinions!

Climate change is the utmost crucial issue. If our planet cannot support life, literally nothing matters.

I will vote for Hillary Clinton. She is the best qualified person running from any party or independently. I also believe she can get things done.

I will unfollow this thread now since I do not wish to debate.

I have 2: Dealing with climate change, and then there’s the wealth inequality/elections being bought by billionaires, which is all kind of related.

I normally detest talking about politics, but I need to hear what issues I may not be aware of since I don’t care for any candidates at the moment!

Environmental protection. We’ve got to stop destroying our planet and wiping out non-human species, or we’re going to become extinct too, and then politics won’t mean anything.

My second and related topic is government corruption. In particular, the way the largest companies and rich investors use their money and influence to buy our elections, control our government, and even write our laws. Solving that may be necessary and the most effective way to stop our destruction of the planet, and also to transforming our governments into something positive, for all other issues.

I agree that climate change is enormously important, and many politicians are too frightened to take it seriously because they’re worried about a corporate backlash.

You need to look at both international/global policy and domestic policy too. As an outsider looking in, gun control would be very high on my list along with health care. If a candidate has the balls (speaking figuratively) to handle these issues, perhaps you can rely on them to tackle other difficult and contentious problems too.

I consider domestic policy, immigration/foreign policy, and social issues to be one issue because these deal with the security and freedom of the individual and the nation. These are the most important issues because they’re the foundation for what allows everything else to function and evolve. I would then say economics because security and freedom are not free of charge.

Environment: It is the most critical issue of this generation. If we don’t start adequately responding there will be no future of this country or the human race.

Money in politics: America is currently an oligarchy and as the constitution states we are a to be a democratic republic. By the people for the people. Not a few people for some of the people.

For me it will always be healthcare. Out of self preservation I simply cannot vote for someone who does not support socialized medicine.

Environmental issues are also vital to me.

Climate change is the most important issue, but Supreme Court nominations are my focus. The SCOTUS can impact so many things that having an idiot like Trump selecting a new judge makes my skin crawl.

There isn’t one single issue – as you and others have noted, there are easily a dozen issues that are major decision points.

I know that I am not going to find a politician (presidential candidate) who I am agreeing with 100% on all issues.

What I look for is a candidate that I agree with most of the time on most of the issues,

Why is each and every one of the issues listed above so contentious and seemingly intractable? Why is it that we alone can’t recognize the benefits of socialized medicine? Why is it only in America that there are 2 political parties that matter and one of them specifies denial of climate change as bedrock dogma? Why and how do they get away with it? Is it merely that it’s easy to sell an ignorant population a ridiculous bill of goods? Why does politics in America boil down to convincing the majority to vote against its own interests?

The BIG political issue is about wresting control and manipulation of our government away from those who effectively own it and strive mightily to keep us on the wrong side of both History and reality. Is it merely a coincidence that those on the wrong side of all these issues just happen to be getting richer than shit through maintenance of the status quo, or just a lucky happenstance that these same folks pull the levers of power? Which candidate threatens to work on upsetting the trough fattening the pigs?

Yep, climate change and environmental issues first and foremost of all. I am still astounded so many deny global warming and the, undeniable human impact. Mind boggling!
