Is your pointer or your ring finger longer?

Asked by Soubresaut (13714points) February 2nd, 2016

As stated—which is longer?—and also (if it’s ambiguous) what sex are you?

Me: female, and my ring finger is longer, by about ⅓ – ¼ the final segment of that finger.

Why I’m asking: I’ve heard that men’s ring fingers tend to be longer, and women’s pointer fingers. However, in the dreadfully unscientific survey I’ve taken, four women have longer ring fingers (note that three are directly related to each other), and one man’s fingers are identical length.
Alternatively, I’ve heard from sources that finger length is an indication of how much estrogen or testosterone you were exposed to in the womb. (Longer ring finger = more testosterone; longer pointer = more estrogen). Online sources seems to indicate that there is something of truth here. Does anyone happen to know? (Or happen to know more about it?)

Equal. Male.

It’s hard to tell where they start, but just looking at the tips, my ring finger is longer. I’m a guy. My middle finger is the longest. Makes for a more effective bird.

Longer ring finger. Female.

That depends on how I angle my fingers.

Longer ring finger…male. This article postulates some behavioral predispositions and diseases associated with finger length ratios. Behaviorally I match up with all the examples given in the article.

Longer ring finger. Female

Something I just noticed that I’ve never noticed before. My middle and ring finger on my right hand are slightly longer than the same fingers on my left hand. hmm

Ring finger. Female.
That much easier when flipping the bird.

Compared to the length of the middle fingers, both my ring fingers are longer than their companion pointers. However,_when I measured from the crease at the palm to the end of the finger, the ring fingers are the same length as the pointers.

Pointers on both hands are just a tad longer.

Jealous?

@DancingMind I heard about that research. They noticed a correlation between finger length and men being gay, or something like that.

“Jealous?”…the fuck you on about :D

Female, my ring finger is just the tiniest bit longer.

@Yetanotheruser well shoot, my fingers are the same length when I measure them from the crease too! ... and apparently that’s how I’m supposed to measure anyway so I guess I’ve messed this whole thing up

@JLeslie—I hadn’t actually heard about that! I guess I should’ve done more research. Reading about it how, it seems like there are all sorts of correlations they’re tentatively making… I’ve got to admit I’m a little hesitant to put much weight in the correlations, because they seem to be about aspects of personality, and even health, that have a wide range of factors….

@DancingMind I’m hesitant too.

Ring finger longer by about the last joint. Male.

But the only finger I wear a ring on is my middle finger? Perhaps the bird needs a collar?

MollyMcGuire's avatar

I have one of each. My hands are not symmetrical.

ibstubro's avatar

Which hand is your ring finger on, @MollyMcGuire, and is your pointer (index) finger on your left or right hand? How odd! ~~

rojo's avatar

Male, Ring Finger. The right hand more so than the left.
