Why do you get freckles from the sun?

Asked by Mrs_Dr_Frank_N_Furter (587points) July 25th, 2008

Ok, so I have like barelyany freckles on my face and just a few on my body. I was recently at camp and i got really tan (which I am EXTREEEEEEEEEEEEEMLY happy about), but now I have quite a few freckles on my face, hands and arms. Why?

my first guess would be that it has something to do with pigment saturation, i’m sure someone will pop up a wiki answer in a few minutes :)

Mrs_Dr_Frank_N_Furter's avatar

probably. I know wiki is pretty reliable, but people can change it (it has to go through approval, but still…). But back on the subject

dragonflyfaith's avatar

Here’s a pretty simplified answer.

And a more detailed answer

Mrs_Dr_Frank_N_Furter's avatar

that’s interesting

Personally, I can say that mine fade during the winter months and come out more in the summer time. Even an hour during the summer brings them out for me.

Mrs_Dr_Frank_N_Furter's avatar

see but I have a semi fair complextion (not like really white. Actually not even fair, it’s semi dark i should say) and I rarely get them, so why did I get them now?

marinelife's avatar

The sun Mrs._Dr. When I lived in Seattle, I did not have that many, but since Florida, oh boy!

Mrs_Dr_Frank_N_Furter's avatar

well it doesn’t always rain here

flyawayxxballoon's avatar

The more sun, the more freckles.

Mrs_Dr_Frank_N_Furter's avatar

well what about people with darker skin? they don’t have a lot of freckles

dragonflyfaith's avatar

@Marina, they don’t call us the Sunny State for nothing! It’s rarely cloudy but often hot and sunny.

flyawayxxballoon's avatar

@Mrs ; You don’t neccessarily need fair skin to get freckles, people with fair skin are just more prone to them.

dragonflyfaith's avatar

From the second link I gave “people with dark complexions are relatively less sensitive to sun exposure than fair-skinned people”

Mrs_Dr_Frank_N_Furter's avatar

well I’m not a big reader…I’m more of a skimmer

girlofscience's avatar

So that Sawyer can flirt with you.

flyawayxxballoon's avatar

I am extremely fair skinned and get freckles like crazy, but I do know some people with not-so-fair skin who also get a fair amount of freckles from time to time. I guess it just all depends on who you are.

Mrs_Dr_Frank_N_Furter's avatar

ew. he’s ugly (in my opinion)

dragonflyfaith's avatar

It just one of those things..you have to see his on screen chemistry to get it. I’d sit in the sun all day if it would mean Sawyer in something other than just my dreams.

Is it getting hot in here?

tinyfaery's avatar

Even I want Sawyer to flirt with me. I was born with my freckles, so there.

dragonflyfaith's avatar

@tiny, I just had to give you GA there.

flyawayxxballoon's avatar

Haha.

^suddenly feels young^

Wayyy too old for my taste…

Mrs_Dr_Frank_N_Furter's avatar

it’s not the age.

dragonflyfaith's avatar

@flyaway We discussed this already, dang you’re making me feel old again! Haha

flyawayxxballoon's avatar

@dragon ; Haha, chances are, we’ll be making each other feel this exact way when we cross paths in the future…but I don’t mind. =) I’m interested in what you have to say.

@girlofscience:

I’m more of a John Locke man myself.

nikipedia's avatar

@manoffaith: Wow, you have lousy taste.

Mrs_Dr_Frank_N_Furter's avatar

I’m more of a Tim Curry myself :)

Oh and Keith Allen

And DEFINITLY George Clooney. What girl doesn’t like him?

manoffaith's avatar

Nikipedia: what about that picture doesn’t scream: “I need to bang that dude”?

girlofscience's avatar

@Mrs_Dr_Frank_N_Furter: No offense, but um, this post wasn’t about celebrity crushes. The only reason the Sawyer reference was relevant is because of his nickname for Kate on Lost.

flyawayxxballoon's avatar

@Mrs ; Haha. For an old guy, George Clooney isn’t too bad. =)

@man ; Wow, you do have bad taste! “what about that picture doesn’t scream: “I need to bang that dude”?” Um, how about everything!

dragonflyfaith's avatar

@Mrs_Dr I can totally give you props for George.

Mrs_Dr_Frank_N_Furter's avatar

@science: i don’t care

@dragon:thanks

dragonflyfaith's avatar

Anyway you’re fair skinned and spent a lot of time in the sun (probably over several days since it was camp), thus freckles.

This was my attempt to remain on topic.

girlofscience's avatar

@Mrs: I just realized this was your own post anyway! Sorry! Now I see the relevance of your response!

manoffaith's avatar

@flyawayballoon: Picky picky! If that doesn’t do it for you, well, if this one doesn’t win you over, nothing will:

flyawayxxballoon's avatar

@man; “This image or video has been moved or deleted.” Yep, that won me over alright. Haha.

dragonflyfaith's avatar

@Man I don’t know why your link didn’t work. See picture here

syz's avatar

Ok, this thread is weirding me out…..

flyawayxxballoon's avatar

@man ; Oh yes!! Totally won me over…
Haha—no.

dragonflyfaith's avatar

@syz It just gets better and better huh?

At this point, I’m so sleepy I’m giddy and silly. Time to cash in my chips and have some lovely Sawyer dreams.

girlofscience's avatar

@flyawayxxballoon: So, you think manoffaith has bad taste in women too? :(

flyawayxxballoon's avatar

@girl ; Perhaps, perhaps not…hard to tell…
[Just kidding. =) ]

scamp's avatar

girlofscience. I think manoffaith is telling us he prefers men.

girlofscience's avatar

@scamp: If that’s the case, then he’s been mistaking my vagina for a penis for a long time.

Mrs_Dr_Frank_N_Furter's avatar

ok TOOOOOOTALLY unnecessary

scamp's avatar

Yep.. TMI!

dragonflyfaith's avatar

@gos Noted. And now cleansing my brain of such image…lol
