Why is prostitution so bad?

Asked by dopeguru (1928points) February 25th, 2016 from iPhone

Why is it bad for a college student to earn 2000 dollars from a shag with a wealthy man who is clean and decent?

Because they can get arrested and a prostitution arrest does not look good on a college graduates resume.

Why are there websites like seeking arrangements up if one can get arrested and its illegal?

Because @dopeguru our government is grossly inept especially at enforcing existing laws…plus chasing petty crimes like prostitution only further clogs up the court systems. But arrests for prostitution happen on a daily basis in most metro areas.

Nothing, absolutely nothing, guarantees that a john will be clean and decent. They could have sexually-transmitted diseases, like to beat or hurt their sex partners.

Think about selling your body (yourself) so someone can have sex with you. What does that do to your self esteem?

I wouldnt do it because I dont need it, you know?

But I have friends who do. I think we value sex too much in this society. Its no biggie! Like marriage.

Because Y-shaped coffins are custom made & don’t come cheap, she’d have to rob her pimp

Prostitution in and of itself is not bad. It can have bad repercussions however as noted above.

It’s a lot like marijuana…“they” decided it’s immoral, therefore should be illegal. A prostitute paid pleasure partner, in an unregulated environment, is exposed to the worst kinds of people as clientele in the underground economy. If it were legalized and regulated (via permit or licensing requirements, for example) it would be easier to control the quality of both the provider and the clientele.

Who says it is bad?

Sex work that is performed by choice and without coercion is not bad, and is legal in many places.

The only thing “wrong” is the danger. Whether in a hotel room, automobile, or back alley, prostitution happens in private places. Both the buyer and the seller are at risk for physical harm or death.

Beyond that, I have no problem with two consenting adults engaging in a sexual act for money.

It is low hanging fruit for the most part. Men are base, pathetic sexual creatures and women can exploit that if they are willing to take the risks involved. In areas it illegal, it makes it extra dangerous. A woman abused by a John has no recourse. A woman killed who has been a prostitute, her life is devalued to the point of being put at the bottom of the pile to be solved.

I wish it was above board and legal. It could be healthier, regulated, taxed… no one ends up on a sex offenders register… and nobody has their children taken away because of what they do to pay rent.

This issue came up on a recent question and there was no ability to explain my position on things, so.. thanks for this question.

The prostitution aspect itself is not a problem, according to my moral code.

The problems I see are:

* The economic system where people need money to get basic needs met, which drives some people to desperation and all sorts of crime, including prostitution, which they would otherwise not do. I think it’s terrible if someone would not want to prostitute themselves, but end up feeling it is their only option.

* Drug-addicted people who start needing lots of money, and so sell themselves for money for drugs in a self-destructive addictive spiral.

* Bad pimps of all kinds.

* Any situation in addition to the first three that causes forced / coerced / obligatory prostitution, and/or takes advantage of the situation.

* Dangerous situations that can come up unless well managed. STD’s, power issues, etc.

* Mental health and maturity issues.

* The illegality adds problems to the situation, since it leads to secrecy and the unavailability of help.

We are all prostitutes in a way, we just sell different parts of our bodies to make a living. Some brains, some hands, some legs, some their mouth and some their crotch.

Holy crap, @rojo! That is brilliant and straight to the point.

I hope you were wearing a shower cap for that one, @rojo.

If your goal in life is to get as many stds possible, then prostitution is the best way to accomplish it. Good luck.
