What would happen if we have reverse traditional gender proportion in jobs?

Asked by Unofficial_Member (5107points) March 5th, 2016

To put it simple, imagine if we live in the world where the majority of the traditional gender-specific jobs have reverse proportion of sexes. We would have more female police officers, more male nurses, more househusbands, more female construction workers, etc. How would you feel about it? Will it affect you in anyway?

It would affect me in no way whatsoever. I don’t think gender norms are particularly useful in society. We need more diversity not less.

There would be a lot more ugly dudes taking their clothes off for money on the internet…

What would happen is that things would be reversed. And that’s kind of where the story ends. Gender roles are outdated and useless.

If we did it in politics, without including people like Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachman (or Margaret Thatcher), we might get something like World Peace. ;-)

As long as the people in the jobs have been appointed based on their ability to do the job, rather than their individual genitalia, I don’t care. Male nurses/female nurses – as long as they can care for patients – I’m cool with it. Female Firies/Male Firies – as long as they can carry a person out of a burning building and handle a fire hose etc. I don’t give a rats.

Honestly I doubt I would give it a second thought.

Women would find something else to complain about.

Nope. It wouldn’t bother me in the least. It’s funny. I like female doctors better than men doctors and prefer male nurses to female nurses.

My primary concern would be how qualified they are for the job at hand either physically, emotionally, or intellectually, depending upon the dictates required by that particular job.

I’ve never seen a woman on a garbage truck.

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

@LuckyGuy, but you could. There’s no reason why a woman couldn’t work on a garbage truck. Especially here, there’s a machine that picks up the bins and empties them. No more running down the street hauling trash cans. (Nice to see you by the way.)

@Earthbound_Misfit It is nice to see you too!
Maybe women could – in your fancy world. Where I live the guys run along side or hang onto the back and jump off as the truck glides to a stop. They haul the 360 liter, (96 gallon) toters off the lawns and onto the hook in the back of the truck so it can lift and dump it. If they are light the guys just pick them up and dump since that is so much faster tan the slow moving machine. Then they toss the empty toters onto the lawn so they land sideways. That way the wind doesn’t blow them over and into the street.
For about ¼ to ⅓ of the year there is snow and the toters end up all over the place. The customers might stack them neatly by the side of the road in their driveway but the snow plow comes rumbling down the road at 80kph and buries them in a wall of snow, slush, and road salt. The guys free them and dump the monsters like nothing happened. Then there are the recycle bins. They are loaded with papers magazines cardboard. glass metal and can easily weight 20–25 kg. We put them on the ground next to the toter. Lifting one is ok but doing it 100–200 times is brutally hard work.
The crews trade off periodically so they can rest by driving.
Can you tell, we love our garbage pick up guys?

I work in childcare/preschool. I’d love to see more competent men in my workplace.
