Why is Mongolia generally a very unpleasant environment for LGBTQ?

Asked by NerdyKeith (5489points) March 12th, 2016

What is this homophobia based on? From my understanding Mongolia is mostly Buddhist, which is not exactly a particularly homophobic religion. Is it more of a cultural attitude? Perhaps just pure ignorance and being misinformed?

Perhaps it’s a hard-scrabble 3rd world backwater with just the sort of macho traditions and attitudes one might expect.

Because it’s Mongolia and full of goddamn Mongolians.

Going out on a limb here, I am going to say that Mongolia is no different than many other locales in the world; that you will find the same attitudes in other countries. Here in Texas, I doubt she would have gotten away with just a beating and threats. Ignorance and intolerance is not limited to only one particular group or nationality.

Yes, Mongolia is majority Buddhist, but you need to understand that Buddhism is a rather loose, highly syncrestic religion. There’s many different forms of Buddhism, and no real central authority that sets doctrine. As Buddhism spread across Asia people melded it with their already existing cultures, rather than it greatly altering the culture (in the way that Christianity and Islam have). So, for the most part, cultural attitudes and prejudices tend to remain even after the spread of Buddhism.
