How do older women get rid of belly fat?

Asked by MooCows (3216points) March 14th, 2016

Is there a magic that I don’t know about to get rid
of belly fat? Besides my belly I am fairly trim and
I want this belly fat to go away. I see so many
“drink this” and it trims belly fat etc. What is the
best thing to do?

One of the benefits of aging is that our adipose tissue congregates in various parts of our body based on our body type. Some people, like me, have a tendency to store fat in our bellies, which is hard on one’s heart.

The best way is to get one’s Body Mass Index down to 23 or lower; that’s about the only way to get fat from those places where your body stores it. Other than that, you can’t target a specific area.

My BMI is, like perfect, (5 ‘8”, 145 lb) but I still have some belly fat, due to carrying 3 babies. Even if I was 120 pounds I’d still have belly fat. The pregnancies stretch your stomach muscles and it takes some work to get them back in shape.
When I was in my late 20’s (after I had the kids) and on into my 30’s and 40’s I did between 80 and 100 sit ups every day. I had the flattest stomach ever. I kind of quit doing sit ups a few years ago. Really need to get back into it.

The same way that young women get rid of belly fat – diet and exercise. If the area’s a problem spot that won’t respond to either, liposuction.

Please, Jellies, don’t hate on me for suggesting cosmetic surgery as an option. I’ve had 3 liposuctions, all with outstanding results.

Burn their TVs, throw out the Doritos and make with the hot yoga and aerobics.

It so sucks, doesn’t it? You can eat lots of veggies and very little fat and control your carb intake, and very little cheating on that diet, and don’t over eat, and do a combo of aerobics exercise and weights or resistance.

Yes @JLeslie, liposuction does suck.

As has been said @MooCows, you can’t spot reduce without resorting to liposuction or surgery. You need to focus on diet and burning calories, just like anyone else.

Guess I will resort to eating sunflower seeds :(

@Dutchess_III Yes, it’s expensive indeed. At least for me, however, it was worth every penny.

I was born with those awful “saddlebag” thighs that stick out on top. I couldn’t find trousers that fit. My waist and hips were very slim; I had to buy a large size, to get around my legs, and have the top altered. I also couldn’t wear anything but loose skirts and dresses, and I looked weird in a bathing suit. After a quick, if pricey, procedure, everything was in proportion. Maybe 32 years ago, that surgery cost $4K. But, I can’t even describe how happy I was then and continue to be.

Diet an exercise. No easy answer.

Well theres always liposuction and abdominoplasty

@MooCows… sunflower seeds in the shell. Unshelled, by themselves, they are very fattening. All nuts are.

Fastest way is a body shaper / girdle. Women in my moms time all did it after 40 and no one body shamed anyone. Everyone accepted it as a part of life.

^^Lol. They do say women gain weight when they get married. Partly, because they eat the same amount as their husbands, and women tend to be 6 inches shorter on average.

I heard that after menopause, fat redistributes to women’s stomachs. That’s why many older women may not be overweight, but will still have puffy middles.

Discuss this with your doctor. I’m sure she will have some helpful suggestion.
