How about the bonus of both at once?

The Republican Party has been on the path to self-destruction since the Goldwater years – I recommend the following book: link

So one could easily arrive at the conclusion that the demise of the republican party was foreordained and inevitable.

That said, Trump would be pretty awful.

I do think that the US does need a vibrant and intelligent second party besides the democratic party. No one-party government ever works well. The problem is that the current republicans are NOT the vibrant and intelligent ones.

I think Trump would be worse than no republican party.

Either is relatively harmless compared to how awful it would be if Ted Cruz was President.

Trump is an embarrassment, a blowhard, but given that the rest of the government won’t cooperate with him he would be relatively benign.

Ted Cruz scares the hell out of me.

If the Republican Party completely fell apart in the Fall, leaving a small number of elected officials sputtering in Washington, it would never be missed except for Sunday morning talkshows.

^^Don’t forget about the Tuesday morning prayer breakfasts.

We could weather Trump. We got through 8 years of possibly the dumbest sonofabitch ever to sit in the White House. We can handle Trump. If the Republican Party fell apart, it would splinter into about three different parties. The almost equally disappointed and diverse Democrats (remember the Big Tent Party of ‘04—the ineffective herding of the cats?), after a term or two, would do the same.

We could actually end up with a real multi-party system with real choices instead of fake ones.

I’d go through a little pain and confusion for that.

False choices.
The destruction of the republican party would be a good thing.

The destruction of the GOP would not make the US a laughing stock in the eyes of the world or send us to war.

Too late on both counts.

This article from The New York Times suggests that Republican conservatives may back an independent candidate if Trump wins the nomination.

If one steps back from “the horror, the horror” this election is almost comedic.

Trump as president. Political parties come and go, or change over time. There have been others, there will be others.
