Do you know how or why a US soldier was killed "in action" for the first time since the official withdrawal of US troops in Iraq?

Asked by msh (4270points) March 20th, 2016 from iPhone

Most news agencies did not cover any particulars surrounding a soldier’s death nor the low-keyed operations taking place in Iraq. Iraq- the country where we (US) recently negotiated a treaty?
The Marine- from the branch of the military usually sent First into an area of instability, was working on a new type of facility for the battle against ISIS. The intel about this new type of facility was not due to be released to the public yet.
With the death of a highly trained Marine via a rocket blast on Saturday, the Pentagon was forced to agknowledge and reveal the information concerning the creation of the fire base in Iraq, where his death occurred.
No. Not- A Fire Base…..it’s A…fire base. ( only lower case! )

Have we just opened up a whole new level of troop involvement for the USA?
The information grudgingly released today by the Pentagon stated that it was to be turned over to those nationalist factions fighting ISIS. (sos about our “just establishing and then we leave” pattern.)
What in the world is this really about?
Did other nations participating in this Middle Eastern scourge know of these fire bases?
Was this done in conjunction with the cessation and withdrawal of Russian Air Force missions? .....A Next Phase, if you will, of anti-ISIS operations?
What gives?

The Administration last year announced the supplying of combat advisors and personnel to support the development of Iraqi response to ISIS. This is not unknown or unreported. While it is sad to lose a serviceman in combat, it is not a surprise that US troops are in harm’s way.

It’s part of the plan to retake Mosul. Once thats accomplished we dont have to ‘officially withdraw’ again, which would be embarrassing, as we aren’t officially involved.

Nothing to this magnitude nor troop involvement was listed, written nor spoken about as to our support and training of any Iraqi forces. Other area countries- yes. Iraq- no.
The begrudging release of information concerning this military set up was a forced hand to play- due to alert reconnaissance and killing on ISIS’ part.
This particular base is already named, as stated in the article. What/where/how many others exist? This is a new approach, if keeping count. Is this due to others being built- based outside of Iraq? Are we stepping up again?
Our financial involvement alone?
Wouldn’t drone warfare be more cost-effective? Seems to take better care of some major players that cluster bombing the hell out of everything has worked so far. (Too bad about those oil fields…all the more Russian oil to be sold at market now $$$)
Ten to one: any released info concerning this new forray by the US put out to the press this week will bend over backwards to make it appear as nothing of the sort ( stepped up actions by the US) with very minimal ‘official’ US presence being touted- we are there for training purposes only!
It will all be buried under the banners and parades being shown about Cuba, no doubt.
Even if they show those sweet cars frozen in time for decades in Cuba, this step-up action will still be buried. “Pay no attention to the man…no, wait, troops behind the curtain, Dorothy…”

This is nothing new.
It will be news when you find out there are no Americans in the Middle East. Which won’t happen.
Who did you imagine was supporting the peshmerga forces?
