Pellets don't kill yard moles, right? You have to use traps, correct?

Asked by Aster (20023points) April 20th, 2016

I wondered why a third of the back yard had only weeds and the grass was gone. I saw a dozen golf ball shaped holes and I now know they’re moles! Do I have to use a mole service that sets traps when we have two dogs? Or is there a way to get rid of them that’s safe with pets? We also have a pile of sand right in front of one of my nicest rose bushes. That has to do with moles or it’s fire ants. Thanks so much in advance.

Never use poison bait with pets around and also, anything that ingests it can cause secondary poisoning in prey animals/birds that might ingest the carcasses of the poisoned animals. Moles feed on earthworms only, Gophers on roots, grasses and, of course, your veggie garden. Are you sure they are Moles, or Gophers first of all? You can try flooding out the burrows by putting your garden hose down the holes but this may or may not be effective.

You can also try a non-toxic mixture of castor oil and dish soap sprayed around your yard and in their burrows or yes, call in a professional to trap some of them. Thing is, it is spring when everything is doing it’s thing, so, don’t expect to rid yourself of all Moles/Gophers, it just won’t happen. Personally I love them both, a few holes here and there don’t bother me as I think they are very cute little critters and just doing their thing.

You actually just shoot them.
You can watch this instruction video called exploding varmints

They do make fake poison worms that I’ve heard are effective, but I don’t know the poison, and I don’t know the possible effect on other animals.

Call a professional, if the money’s not a show-stopper.

One product I had great luck with was a mole gasser. You hook a garden hose to it, hook the gasser to the tailpipe of a vehicle, shove the hose into the burrow and start the vehicle. You can leave it run as long as you’re comfortable with, and/or move it around. One warning is to make sure the diameter of your gasser and the tailpipe of your vehicle are compatible.

^ and make sure your tail pipe is not blocked or the Mole gasser will gas your ass. lol

Your tailpipe will be sorta blocked, @Coloma, in that the fumes will be diverted into the mole burrow.

But there’s no reason to sit in the vehicle, or have the windows up. I just fired the truck up, went inside, set the timer, and turned the truck off 10–20 minutes later.

BTW, it cost me under $10, and is good for as many times and years as you need it.

One thing that worked well for me was exhaust from my truck. I connected a garden hose to my truck’s exhaust pipe and put the hose down the mole hole.

Also I put a garter snake down a mole hole once and there was no more mole activity in my yard for the rest of the year.

My neighbor told me that he put 5 gallons of propane gas down a mole hole and then lit it. Stupid and dangerous but he said that it worked.

I thought about putting dry ice down the mole holes but never tried it.
