Could a French speaking Finnish immigrant live in California?

Asked by BMOMans (20points) April 25th, 2016

My neighbor is too afraid to learn English for many reasons. The majority has to do with Finnish stereotypes. She has fallen in love with French, and decides to do everything in French here in the States, as if we were France, Canada, etc. I am worried that she will not survive here in the States only speaking Finnish and French.

Well, she can certainly live wherever she wishes. She may find it very difficult, however, to communicate. I’m trying to imagine her pantomiming to a cab driver or attempting to order food in a restaurant!

There are so many details missing in this question that it is nearly impossible to answer. Does she have a visa? Planning to work? Speaks no English? If the answer to any of the above is no, probably she couldn’t.

@janbb she doesn’t speak English, according to one of the OP’s questions.

That leads us to another question: why is she learning French in California? Isn’t English a much more useful language? She only knows one language so it doesn’t matter what second language she can learn. She just wants to break the stereotype right?

And I wonder how she learns French in the US with no knowledge of English…

If one wants to learn a language other than English to live on in California, you can go very far learning Mexican-Spanish (not Spanish from Spain).

I see French tourists all the time in San Francisco, and everyone tries to help with their high school French, and all we do is confuse them.

It would be a nightmare; albeit an interesting one, if you are young and hot and cluby. I’d go with Montreal or New Orleans instead.

She has to improve her English. I find it very had to believe she doesn’t speak English. It is mandatory in school in Finland from an early age ( as it is here in Norway ) They are also forced to learn Swedish so they can cope with their neighbours.
If your friend is not speaking English with you perhaps they don’t want to talk to you. I’ve been to Finland.
