Would Casablanca qualify as a cult movie?

1. “Replicants are like any other machine, they’re either a benefit or a hazard.

If they’re a benefit they’re not my problem.”

2. “First person that comes out this fucking door gets a… gets a lead salad, you understand?”

Also, “I want to have your abortion.” (book).

3. “PC load letter! What the fuck does that mean? ”

Off the top of my head, and without giving it more thought than it takes to type this sentence: Dogma.

However, like @janbb, I’m wondering what qualifies as “cult”. Because I also quite like Casablanca, and I can recall a lot more of the dialogue and scenes.

Rarebear's avatar

@CWOTUS @janbb I wouldn’t classify Cassablanca as a cult movie as it’s pretty universally acclaimed as a great movie. (Actually, it’s not my favorite Bogart movie although it has the best lines).

But since I did not define “cult movie”, I’ll allow the answer. :-)

janbb's avatar

@Rarebear It’s not my favorite either but it’s the one I would call closest to a cult film. African Queen is my favorite.

But are you defining a cult film as one that is not generally acclaimed but has a small devoted following? The God Must be Crazy might fit that criteria then for me.

Rarebear's avatar

@janbb Yes, that would be a good one.

Edit: “Gods”

@janbb I knew what you meant. No worries.

It’s a tossup between Blade Runner and Harold and Maude. I never tire of watching either of them.

But if you held a gun to my head I’d have to pick BR just for the sheer amount of quirky details in so many scenes.

Honorable mention to the last 15 mins. of Blues Brothers; the epic pile-up of cop cars must have been a staging nightmare. But what a cool deal :)

Not sure which are classified as “cult movies” other than for sure my choice of
Rocky Horror Picture Show

also (if they count)
This is Spinal Tap
Office Space
The Big Lebowski

Get Carter (Michael Caine original) FTW

Kentucky Fried Movie or Spinal Tap

@Guitarded Zinc Oxide and You!

@anniereborn Spinal Tap is a very close second to Buckaroo Banzai, along with Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Metropolis is probably my favorite. Despite being a 2.5 hour-long film made in 1927, silent, and in black & white, all which typically make me cringe at the thought, I sat rivited through the whole movie.

This masterpiece by German Fritz Lang has been an influence on many sci-fi directors, including Ridley Scott during his making of “Blade Runner”. Anyone who appreciates sci-if movies should watch this.

@Rarebear

Yeah, Monty Python would be first on my list of humorous cult movies definitely (followed by Blues Brothers)

Another “Rocky Horror Picture Show” fan here.

“Cat On a Hot Tin Roof” should be a cult movie.
“The Last Picture Show” might qualify?

#3 Fight Club… “Everyone smiles with that invisible gun to their head.”

#2 Clockwork Orange… “We can destroy what is written, but we cannot unwrite it.”

#1 Death Race 2000…

I just happened to run across this one out of the blue. It’s so dumb that I can’t watch it for more than 5–10 minutes at a time (even with all of the cute, bare-breasted, nubile young things jiggling their way through it; I may never watch it to the end – in fact, I’ll be surprised if I ever do) but Nude on the Moon has taken over from Revenge of the Virgins for “cult favorite”.

Really, they are both dumb, dumb flicks, and I absolutely do not recommend either of them. You’ll be stupider for every minute you spend watching either one, and even the nudity is surpassed by 95% of the rest of the internet, but … there they are.

Absolutely NSFW, in case there was the least doubt.
