Why does this show that the picture was modified a year before it was created?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46807points) April 28th, 2016

I was double checking the dates on some of my pictures to know which album to create for them, and I saw this. It’s that way on the handful of others I looked at. So did I take the pictures in 2014 or 2015?

You likely made a copy of this file (or backed it up) on 2015.01.11, but the original content of the photo (either by camera or photo editor) was from 2014.12.25.

I was able to duplicate this by making a copy of an image and inspecting the details of the copied image. I get the same thing.

Ah. Thanks G. That makes sense. So I actually took it in 2014?

^ correct – or you could have modified the photo on that date.

But it would be logical to assume it was created in 2014. Why are we whispering? ~

@Dutchess_III: “But it would be logical to assume it was created in 2014”

It’s my understanding that either of these is possible:

1. You took the photo on 2014.12.25.
2. You took the photo on 2010.01.31 (or any date <= 12.25.2014) and made edits to that photo on 2014.12.25.

Because there is already too much noise from cars :).

SNORT!!! HONK!!!! BEEP!!!! CHIRP!!!!! TOILETS FLUSHING WHOOSH!!!

1. You took the photo on 12 25 14

2. You took the photo on 01 31 2010 (or any date <= 12.25.2014) and made edits to that photo on 12 25 14.

Sorry. Had to blow it up and reconfigure the dates so I could understand more easily. But wait….your last one, #2 reads “any date prior to 12 25 14. That’s where I’m confused.

I’m just proposing that the photo could have been taken on any date <= (less than or equal to) 12/25/2014, but that the modified date reads 12/25/2014 because that was when you modified it (using a photo editor). Does that make sense? Sorry about the date format in the previous comments. This is how I format dates at work. It makes the most sense to me.

Of course THAT makes sense, but that’s not what the property shows.
It shows it was created in on Jan 11 2015 which was >>>>> (after) 12/25/2014.

I wonder if it’s the same people who messed up the time stamp in that famous resturaunt….

^ Ok, here’s what your screenshot shows. Remember, each date is referring to an action on the file. If you ignore that this was a photo, it might be easier. What we’re looking at is properties of a file.

CREATED: On 1/11/2015, this file was created. It means that you copied it to a new location (maybe to an external hard drive) or maybe you moved it from an SD card to your C drive. This is the date that Windows is considering that this copy of the file was created.

MODIFIED: On 12/25/2014, the birth of our lord, this file’s content was actually modified. That means that the file was really either created via your camera taking the photo, or a photo editor modifying the original file.

Again, I could be wrong, but this is my understanding of how Windows handles files.

OK. There is a good chance it was copied. I’m just gonna go with a creation year of 2014. I’m trying to compile family reunions by year.

You are a wonderful man, Lord DKM and I love you very much.
