What is harder than people realize?

Asked by Mariah (25883points) May 9th, 2016

I love learning about people’s hobbies, skills, and life circumstances, and all the subtleties that outsiders don’t know about.

My answer to this question: keeping fish! If you’re doing it right it’ll eat up a lot of your time and money! You have to understand how their ecosystem works and keep it in balance. Fish are not the easy, child-friendly pet that pop culture makes them out to be.

Also, programming! I think all the movies that portray 15 year old “hackers” are damaging to the reputation of the field. I notice that people think that building or maintaining a website, or “hacking,” is something that any teenager with a computer should be able to easily learn to do. It’s not that simple! There’s a reason we get paid the big bucks! Hell, understanding code that someone else wrote and didn’t document well can be halfway impossible if you can’t track the author down to question them about it.

I’ll second programming!

Also, having 3 kids. Don’t believe people who say that going from 2 to 3 is easy.

Loving. Loving is often hard at times. It’s not the state of bliss it’s commonly made out to be.
sorry if this isn’t the type or answer you were looking for

@MilkyWay Nah lady that’s a fabulous answer. It should definitely be easy and blissful at times but nowadays I’m learning that there are gonna be patches of pain and hard work too.

Hypothyroidism! Never would have/could have known how tired it makes you until getting it. I knew very, very little about it until I got it. I was just complaining about my constant exhaustion on Facebook. And also the weight gain… That’s hard to handle and it really doesn’t happen because of poor food/health choices. No one cares, or even wants to believe it. It’s very frustrating!

On a more positive note, pyrography. It’s a brand new form of art (for me, I mean) that I attempted about a week ago. You’d think that burning a picture into a slab of wood would be similar to drawing, but no. Also, I wasn’t expecting such bad hand cramps. But, it’s fun and I can’t wait until my first picture is done. :)

Becoming a famous Youtuber. Don’t just look at successful Youtubers with lots of subscribers and tell yourself “oh, these guys just make videos and get famous. I can do that too!” Youtube doesn’t work the sane way as you think.

And speaking of Youtube, don’t whine when your favorite Youtuber doesn’t release video regularly. Just sitting there watching their videos doesn’t tell you how hard it is to make a video. There are a lot of work and effort put into a great video, the “behind the scene” that you can’t see. Cut them some slack and be patient.

This is specifically about Youtube, but it can apply to other things too.

^ Dude yeah, this one LPer I like got hospitalized but because he commits to releasing videos every day he was uploading video blogs despite the NG tube up his nose, I was impressed with his dedication. We think they’re slackers? Any other profession in the world would have the day off under those circumstances!

Living with a house mate.
I never had a housemate my entire life and living with someone else after living alone for years sucks! The 47 year old room mate that has the messy habits and moodiness of a 4 year old. Seriously, no wonder I never wanted a room mate even when I was younger. lol

Significant chronic pain. You can’t know what it’s like living with it unless you have experienced it.

Chronic illness that has no real cure.

Operating an elevator. I say this tongue and cheek, but I worked the sabbath elevator at a resort for two days and the other three temps and the hotel employee in change of us had no real clue how elevators triage floors.

Racing cars. What other sport do you have to be so focused the entire time. Their eyes get dry because they blink less. Football they can rest between plays. Baseball they get bench time. Skiing you take a ride to the top of the mountain.

Having to compromise for many years. Compromise means you really didn’t get what you want. Sometimes it’s fine, but when it’s ongoing you truly lose yourself.

Getting out of debt. Not that I’m in debt, but I see people who get a credit card and then find it so difficult to pay it off and live debt free.

Writing well. I think it’s something that takes years and we can always improve and learn how to write better.

Getting through a single day without reading or hearing the name Trump 50 times!

Coloma's avatar

@Pachy Oh man, I made the fatal mistake of imbibing in a little Trump humor the other day and seriously offended a Trump lover. Egads…a harmless little joke and the person was highly offended. I can’t wait til this freaking election charade is over.

Pachy's avatar

Yeah—his supporters are as thin-skinned as he is. I read yesterday that viewers of Family Guy (I show I refuse to watch) are all up in arms over an orange-skinned, bewigged cartoon character based on Trump (mmm, what other group of people does that remind me of?). Vindictiveness and a super-think skin… what great qualities in a president!

Losing weight. You can gain 20 lbs. in 2 months but it takes 4 months to lose it. Pffft!
