What is the meaning of big blind in Online poker game.

Asked by shashaankchd (7points) May 19th, 2016

I am new in poker industry and want to learn a lot related to poker. Yesterday, I was playing poker on adda52 which is an Indian online poker. The interface and payout structure is very good on the site. But on the poker lobby I saw “Post to big blind” . I want to know the meaning of this term as I saw this word on various other poker sites also.

The big blind is a forced bet that you have to make before you’re dealt any cards.

It is always the size of the minimum stake of the table.

Only one or two players (depending on the exact rules) post a big blind at a time, and it rotates clockwise around the table.

In normal play, there is a big blind, and then a small blind to the right of it. The small blind is a forced bet that is half the size of the big blind.

Though not related to your question directly, if you ever find all players making a forced bet before the hand is dealt, this is called the ante.

The purpose of these forced bets is to add value to the pot and incentivise players to make more plays. Without these forced bets, you could just wait until you’re dealt aces.

I hope that answers your question. If you want a clarification or if you need to know anything else about poker—I know what I’m talking about. It’s a game I played at a fairly high level for a number of years.

@Kropotkin Did you ever play with Amarillo Slim?

@kritiper I wasn’t the poker equivalent of a 1%-er—so no.

I mostly played online.

@Kropotkin‘s answer is very good. I just wanted to add that it also has the effect of “shaking up” gameplay. If you didn’t have a big blind, then very few people would play if they had anything less than very good cards. With the big blind, it’s a lot more unpredictable. For example if the big blind had a 4, 7 offsuit, and then the flop drops a 4, 7, Q, and then another 4 pops up on the turn, and now the big blind player just got a full house on a terrible hand that most players would have folded initially.
