Yahoo messenger is going to be closed soon?

Asked by imrainmaker (8380points) June 16th, 2016

It’s like end of an Era..Many of us might have started with this messenger for connecting with people around the world. Any incidents that you can recall during private conversation/ public chat room ?

Wow.
I hadn’t heard that!
You know, YIM is the only messenger that I remember using. As in, I think I might have used the one or two others, but not enough to even remember?

YIM was freaking awesome in its day! I chatted for hours there, and I think it was my first experience of chatting with actual, live, international people. The wonder of being able to chat with a total stranger, real time, in, say Europe/Asia/Africa. About what they ate for dinner or that they were grieving over the loss of a loved one.

Ah. The memories.

Yahoo was so much freaking potential wasted. It’s like losing a loved one that I’ve grown apart from over the decades.

It won’t be missed by me because I never use it. I did use Yahoo chat rooms though and remember how popular they were back in the day. Now that I was really sad when they got rid of it. I used to stay up all night chatting til three or four in the morning. I met some pretty interesting people on there but sadly have not kept in touch. I really enjoyed making my text different colors and blocking annoying users with interesting messages.

I think doing away with the Yahoo chatrooms was the beginning of the end, @AshlynM, now that you mention it.
I remember the chatrooms closing leaving a big gap in my on-line life. What did you do until 3–4 in the morning after YIM?

Though I do have Yahoo Messenger. I have not used it in ages to chat with anyone. I can’t find any source that it is closing. Where did you see this?

Google is taking over. I just check, and they acquired meebo.com.

I was a user of Yahoo!Messenger and Yahoo!Mail. Back at Yahoo’s heyday those were two most crucial things that you needed if you ever wanted to use the Internet at all. Messenger was like Facebook and Mail was like Gmail. Even if you didn’t like them you had to use them because everyone used them. Messenger was installed on every computer back then. I used Messenger to keep in touch with my friends from long distance, and Mail to receive mails and occasionally sign up on some sites. I didn’t talk to anyone else apart from people I knew as I had little access to the internet (I was still new to the internet too). I still remember the time when meetup sites had things like ”...add me on Yahoo, my username is…”. Mail was extremely useful and user-friendly too. When Gmail first came out I once wondered if I should use it at all.

Now that Yahoo is going to close down, the only thing that concerns me is that my Facebook account is registered with my Yahoo mail address. Apart from that I feel nothing. Yahoo has gone down too much already. Their first bad decision was to close down their Blog, which cost them a lot of users to Facebook. Since then everything else just went downhill, and don’t even get me started with Yahoo!Answer.

It’s really a shame to see something that was such an integral part of online life dwindling to its slow death.

I remember how ubiquitous it was when they first started. It was THE first search engine to become so widely known. Prior to Yahoo, search engines were mainly the province of academe or proprietary services like AOL. Yahoo was unique in it’s early days.

For a time they even published a monthly magazine sold on newsstands featuring interesting sites they wanted to highlight. Anyone else remember buying it. It was a bit of an odd concept since most of the info in the print edition was also available on their online site for free.

But then Google ce along and built a better mousetrap and as happens so often in life, change is the only constant.

RIP, YIM. We remember you fondly.

What’s your ASL became synonymous to Hello in YM days while starting conversation with stranger . Not sure if that’s used anywhere else..??

@ibstubro I think I just stopped going online altogether. I also remember using Angelfire chat, does anyone else remember that?

@Mimishu1995 don’t worry about your facebook account being registered with your Yahoo mail address. Only Yahoo Messenger is shutting down, not Yahoo itself.

^^ Yes, @Mimishu1995, I still use Yahoo mail, and the original version, at that.
