Why isn't Trump funding his own campaign?

Asked by LostInParadise (31904points) June 21st, 2016

He boasted about not being beholden to anyone when he ran in the primaries, but now he is taking outside money and, according the news accounts, is not doing very well. If he is worth 10 billion dollars as he claims, how would a hundred million or so matter?

Actually he has and is. So far he has put in over 45 million of his own money which is around 70% of the 66 million his campaign has raised.

He has lent his campaign money, is how it works. He also doesn’t have 10 billion worth of liquid funds at his disposal. No bank is going give a loan to someone because of their ‘Brand Name’. He has always been taking outside money. Now the campaign is funded differently because he has become the party nomination. http://fortune.com/2016/05/16/donald-trump-couldnt-have-self-funded-his-general-election-campaign/ He and his group will be getting PUBLIC funds that they qualify for, like any other candidate.

According to the second article, it takes several hundred million dollars to fund a presidential campaign. I did not realize how expensive it is.

—@LostInParadise FYI in 2012 both Obama and Romney spent over $950 million each o n their campaigns

Because he isn’t willing to waste his own money on a lost cause.

Also, despite his swaggering claims, he doesn’t have $10 billion. He might hold vast fortunes in fixed assets, but he doesn’t have billions of liquidity.

@Love_my_doggie—kudos for the best and truest answer. He recently bloviated that he might be the first presidential candidate in history to make money running, and that won’t suprise me at all.

@Cruiser “Actually he has and is.”

Your statement is incorrect. Trump began by self-financing his campaign, but he has stopped now, as @LostInParadise said in his question.

Trump has always known how much it costs to run for President. He lied when he claimed he would self-finance. But I’m sure his followers will find a way to rationalize it, like they do everything else.

@dappled_leaves I would sit back and take a breather as the main campaign has yet to even get off the ground. It does not take a leap of genius to know that any person who feigns to self fund any public office campaign can ultimately be reimbursed for all self funded monies…but even I suspect Trumps pockets are not deep enough to make a run for the White House on his own and will need outside support. Right now it is anything can happen time and Trump has defied the odds every step of the way. And if the primaries are any indication money cannot buy you the nomination.

There is the whole GOTV thing. Six months before the DNC convention there was a huge shop of people campaigning for Obama in Eugene in 2008. Like a real organization and we had people and computers and things. There were hundreds of people going out every day in this tiny town to register voters and inform them of Obama’s policies. And this is in a pretty blue state. I mostly did IT work for them. But we put a lot work into doing things like finding people to help drive people to the polls that were unable to get themselves there.

The ground-game is huge and Trump has ignored it. It is really late in the game to put this stuff together. And Trump has said he expects the RNC to do it for him. Good luck with that.

Trump has been the nominee for around a month. He still hasn’t done a thing except piss more people off.

dappled_leaves's avatar

@Cruiser And no one would expect anything else from him, except that he has been flogging the “self-funded” line as if that is a great virtue. If it’s not a virtue, then what has he been asking everyone to pat him on the back for? And if it is a virtue, then he has failed by his own standard.

@johnpowell Trump very well may have been pissing off voters as the nominee for a month…but that does not even come close to how pissed off voters are to 7.6 years of Obama’s tenure. The biggest mistake most and the media have made all along is discount just how fed up voters are with establishment politicians who have made promise after promise and reneged on those promises. I mean the message Republican voters sent to some really big names in the primary that no thanks we are not interested in anymore of your corporate endowed policies and it will be very hard for Hillary to get out from under that same dark cloud of Obama’s failed policies and leadership. Just my opinion of course.

@dappled_leaves Trump’s self funding may not be a virtue to you but it plays out strongly with the disenfranchised voters. The low income and middle class have really taken it on the chin financially. These are not stupid people either that will just gobble up BS solutions to the problems they face. They are on to the fact that corporate controlled Congress has to change and they know that the needed change will not happen under Hillary. People are clearly fed up with the way things have been managed in Congress. There are also enough voters who are wise enough to know Bernies message of taxing the rich is not the answer to their problems as that will only perpetuate the bloating of the Federal Government and do little to nothing to help their cause. The next 4 months will be very interesting to watch play out and Trump will need outside money to make a go at it but I think his source of money will not have the strings attached that Hillary’s millions have.

dappled_leaves's avatar

@Cruiser Exactly. You are making my point – Trump knows that his voters will be impressed by the idea that their candidate is self-financed, so he lied and claimed that was what he would do. He knew all along that he would be taking corporate financing, but instead of telling the truth about it or not talking about it at all, he made the opposite claim.

Knowing all of this, your first comment on this thread was “He has and he is” – but you’ve now shown that you know this is false. Why are you still arguing the point?

Cruiser's avatar

@dappled_leaves Please do not put words in my mouth I never “argued”. I do not know where you get your information from but I have been following he Republican Presidential race every day from day one. I cannot recall Trump ever saying he was going to self finance his entire candidacy. The only point he emphasized was that he was going to self fund as much of his primary run as he could and he did virtually just that. On top of it he spent a fraction of money on his campaign compared to his competition which only reinforces and magnifies the problem of campaign financing that brings the much now hated strings attached to corporate donations that Hillary and the rest of the Republican field took. The DNC and the liberal media can crow all they want about how much money that Hillary has raised but IMO and the court of public opinion much of that money is dirty money tied to obligations to the corporations that gave it. This is the exact thing Trump is championing his campaign will avoid and Trump has said he is prepared to continue to pump more of his own money if need be.

I cannot say for certain but I expect Trump to continue to play the media like a fiddle and get a tremendous amount of free press like he has to date. What amuses me most is how upset the main stream media and others like you are over Trump’s ability to be as strong in this race as he is and again only reinforces the message that myself and many other voters are behind and that is the establishment in Congress has to change and that change will not happen under another 4 years of Clinton.

@Cruiser ” I cannot recall Trump ever saying he was going to self finance his entire candidacy. ”

He could not have been clearer about this.
