How can I clean headphones?

Asked by lugerruger (785points) July 14th, 2016

So… I threw up on my headphones. I am just as disgusted as you probably are right now. There wasn’t much vomit so they’re not ruined, but I don’t know how I can clean them without using so much water that it goes into the speakers and ruins them. Yes, this is disgusting and I am sorry but I really want to get this fixed soon. Thank you!

Use alcohol because it will evaporate quickly and not cause rusting. Just don’t soak them in it. Use something like those little alcohol swabs used to sterilize the skin prior to injections. You can get them for around a buck in any drugstore. Diabetics use them routinely.

I have little spray bottles that I got from the drugstore. They hold about one ounce each. One is for water, one for alcohol, one for Listerine. I used to use one for soapy water, but Formula 409 works just fine. So you can spray your headphones or your keyboard or your mouse with alcohol and wipe it off and it works just fine.

When my kittens developed a skin infection I went back and got a larger spray bottle and filled it with povidone iodine so I can spray a kitten all over, rub it in with my fingers, and then clean up with water. Povidone iodine is cheaper and more easily available than tincture. I think the tincture is used for some illegal drug, or summoning demons or something. They get real suspicious when you try to buy it.

Use light pressure when cleaning plastic so you don’t remove any rubber coating or clear finish. If you have metal trim on your phone, use a water dampened cotton swab instead of rubbing alcohol. Once the outside is clean, use a dry cotton swab to clean out any dust under the battery cover.
