Would you skip a question that has too many answers?

Would you answer a question that has too many replies? I tend to ignore those and just answer ones with fewer replies.

No. I’ll often wait until everyone has had their say and then give a detailed answer often taking the string in a related, but broader area. To do this too early in a thread can either kill it or take it in a direction unintended by the OP and is considered rude.

Yes and no.

Yes, if it’s a question that interests me and which I can comment on with personal knowledge or experience.

No, if it’s on a highly contentious topic which either doesn’t interest me or riles me too much to spend time on.

I DO tend to ignore questions with info that goes on and on and on.

The only questions worth skipping are the ones that hold no interest.

If there is a question that is curious, then I read through every answer already posted, giving GAs to the ones that make sense. If there is something left to be said, then I respond. After all, it’s about helping the person asking the question.

No.

If I haven’t checked in for a while (for a while for me means 12 hours or more), and a question has many answers, I may not read all of them. I may follow and read later, and maybe answer or maybe never answer, or I may answer now and read the previous at another time.

p.s. Might this be a question for “Meta?”

Sometimes. it is not the number of answers – it is whether or not someone else has said the same thing I would have. It seems silly repeat what was said above.

The other interesting thing is – why do people answer questions that have been dormant for 5 years?

No. I don’t always read the previous replies, especially if there are too many if them. I focus to answer the question itself.

On the other hand, I tend to not answer questions that have already past 24 hours, since they’re probably solved already and not fresh anymore.

Yes; I skip by most of them but not all .

I might occasionally skip a question with too many answers. I usually don’t like to answer without reading all the other replies first, and that can be a burden some times.
If it’s a question I feel strongly about, I might answer anyway, and state that I’ve not read the other responses.

marinelife's avatar

Not if I’m interested in the topic.

If it’s just a factual question (e.g. ‘What kinds of venemous snakes do we have the US?’) and it’s already got correct answers there’s no point in me chiming in. But if it’s an opinions question I don’t tend to care how many answers are already there.

Brian1946's avatar

Yep.

I refuse to answer a question that has more than 12 answers! ;-o

Dutchess_III's avatar

No. The more answers, the better the question is, usually.

YARNLADY's avatar

If the other answers state the same thing that I would, I skip it.

AshlynM's avatar

@YARNLADY I tend to do the same.
Thanks everyone.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Yeah butt how many questions are really cut and dried and only have one right answer?

stanleybmanly's avatar

it depends. Some questions require many and varied answers. Others are unworthy of a single reply.

Coloma's avatar

No, but…if my answer is going to pretty much be a carbon copy of everyone elses I just save my breath, er, fingers. No point in repeating the same answer 37 times in a row. Sometimes I might chime in and say ” I agree with so & so ” but really, even that is rather pointless. haha

MrGrimm888's avatar

No. Most interesting questions have lots of people commenting.

SmartAZ's avatar

If there are so many replies that I don’t want to read them all, I assume that everybody else feels the same and there is no point in adding mine.

Kardamom's avatar

Not likely. I would only skip answering if most of the answers were almost identical to what I was going to say.

NerdyKeith's avatar

Well it really depends on the question. If it is a very basic technical question, or a simple question with only one answer; I may perhaps ignore it if I feel it has already been sufficiently answered.

Yeah, I have opened a question that requested a specific answer that was given, correctly, IMO, by the first responder, and just closed the question.
Kibitzing is good and all, but if the question is 100% nailed, GA and give it a rest.
