What happens if you swallow a fish bone and you're on omeprazole?

Asked by tan253 (2948points) July 29th, 2016

Hi All,
I’ve been on Omeprazole for 3 days. I was eating salmon for lunch and I’m pretty sure I swallowed a small bone. I’m a bit hyper sensitive to health so googled what might happen, but now I’m paranoid as Im taking acid-reducing pills! What will happen to the bone, am I more likely to suffer negative consequences like perforation now, will I have enough acid to reduce it? Anyone know what I should be looking out for, or am I being paranoid??

Tan, Tan, Tan, take a deep breath. A tiny little fish bone is not going to be an issue, if it is, it will be like a gazillion to one odds. Just go to bed and forget about it, this too shall pass, literally. Yes, you are being paranoid. Do not add to your paranoia by swallowing an apple seed. haha

Thanks @Coloma – .... what happens if you swallow an apple seed???? There are so many things to be worried about!!

I need to see a therapist. Pity I can’t afford a therapist…. Ok deep breaths, a gazillion to one odds still means there could a chance!! ;)

@tan253 _ gazillion to one odds still means there could a chance!! ;)_

If it’s small enough that you swallowed it accidentally, without choking, it’ll probably pass right through unnoticed.

@tan253 You’re quite welcome.

Sometimes you can ‘bulk up’ something inadvertently swallowed. Next time you could try eating some bread or something to help ease something like that through. It’s more of a veterinary treatment.

Odds to me are that you already bulked it up with whatever you were eating. Most times I’ve ever encountered a bone in salmon it was a vertebrae. If that’s what you ate, you’re golden. The vertebrae are my favorite part of salmon. Crunchy and tasty. If you could die from that, I’d have died 30 some years ago. I also take Prevacid. Another acid med. And that hasn’t layed me low yet.

If you can’t afford therapy, give Fluther a try. Many flutherites are thoughtful, and compassionate. We will try and help you if you can put it in the form of a question.

Good luck.
Peace n love.

It was fresh salmon I cooked so it was those little bones that you normally pick out – quite long and kinda sharp : )
But thank you @MrGrimm888 – I will try Fluther… I’ve calmed down a bit now, and i know what to look for just in case!!!

haha x

Nothing is going to happen.

I guarantee you that absolutely nothing is going to happen, nothing at all. It will come out the other side and you will not even notice. Just drink plenty of water and do not panic. Incidentally your fear are doing you more harm than you can imagine. Hopefully you have forgotten about it already!

Of course seeing a therapist would be ideal, but you should check to see if there are any self help groups for people with OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder)

Just Google it along with your zip code and see what comes up. Good luck.

@tan253 I almost ate a honey glazed moth stuck to one of my honey nut cheerios the other morning. Be grateful you didn’t ingest a bug instead of a bone. See, there is always a silver lining. haha

You need fiber to move such things through the pipes. The best fiber is wheat bran. It only takes two slices of whole grain bread per day, but veggies with one or two meals per day will be almost as good.

You need to read some books about nutrition. Any condition that is treated by omeprazole might also involve a B vitamin deficiency. It’s cheap enough to test: get B-100 and see what happens. Vitamin B2 is a water soluble dye that turns urine bright yellow. When the color fades, it’s time for another pill. Doctors won’t tell you that because they have no training in nutrition.

I think it’s ok, nothing happened!!! ;) x
