Would Almond or Cashew milk be a better choice or just as bad as regular milk? (See details)

Asked by Buttonstc (27605points) August 13th, 2016

All the standard instructions for recovering from severe diahrrea and vomiting state to avoid milk and dairy products.

But since nut milks don’t really contain any dairy, could they be used instead of milk without ill effect?

The main reason I ask is because after more than a week of drinking Gatorade, diluted tomato juice, Ginger Ale and lemon lime soda, my mouth and system is fed up with being so acidic and I’m intensely craving milk but afraid to risk it.

Plus, when things are normal, I drink milk frequently and crave it when I run out.

I don’ think a little cow’s milk will hurt. Maybe a low fat one like 1% or 2%. Having a cup of tea with a quarter cup of milk is a good way to try it out.

It depends what caused your diarrhoea. If it was just an infection (and I’m guessing it might of been from the vomiting) then I’d just eat and drink what you fancy. Most of the advice on what to eat after diarrhoea are old wives tales any way – if you do have diarrhoea caused by an infection eating a normal diet will resolve the symptoms quicker than limiting what you eat. The diarrhoea is your bodies way of getting rid of the infection – the more you go the quicker it gets rid of it and the quicker you recover. If you limit your diet you don’t go as much and stay ill for longer. Counter intuitive I know but there you go.

How about soy milk instead?

Thanks guys. I knew I could count on my Fluther buddies.

Actually, I see what you’re getting at and it does sound pretty sensible.

So, I think I’ll follow my instincts and cravings cautiously and hope tthat the Bentyl works well enough to keep things bearable.

I don’t know which will work better, but I know which one tastes better….Almond milk. Also I like rice milk. Cashew milk sucks IMO.

Almond milk is good and shouldn’t upset your digestive tract. Though if you’re getting it just to drink straight then I might suggest getting a vanilla flavored variety. Plain almond milk isn’t bad tasting, but it can be a little bland.

In my own personal experience I’d recommend against soy milk, unless you enjoy being gassy.

Me, I’d go for real milk, skim or 1%, and here’s a little trick for making even skim taste better. Yes, a drop of vanilla helps, as @Darth_Algar suggests, but also put the glass in the freezer for long enough (5–7 min.) till it develops a thin rime on top…then drink it right up. Icy coldness thickens the low-fat milk a bit and makes it taste better, at least to my taste buds.

Lately I’ve been using ¼ almond milk, ¼ water, ½ cow’s milk. Almond milk is incredibly thick, too thick for me, so I water it down. Adding the regular milk makes the flavor barely changed. It also winds up saving money, because the almond milk lasts a long time since I water it down. I use unsweetened almond milk.

I’ve been doing that because I do believe dairy is bad for us. When I go completely non dairy I feel better, but it’s not like I feel bad when I eat dairy. That probably makes no sense.

I think if dairy doesn’t usually bother you it probably won’t bother you if your episode has basically alread passed.

To answer your direct question, yes, you can drink the nut milks, they are not dairy, and the advice to avoid milk is to avoid dairy.

Almond milk tastes too sweet for me. It tastes like mother’s milk. I prefer bovine milk.

You may be suffering from a temporary lack enzymes in your gut to break down certain elements found in bovine milk. I would suggest trying a cup or two of Acidophilus yoghurt in order to replace the natural bacteria in your intestine that helps to breakdown these elements that are causing your discomfort.

Or, you can call your doctor for advice.
