What is your favorite boy/girl names?

Asked by MooCows (3216points) August 31st, 2016

Was wondering what people’s favorite names were
now that names have really changed it seems.
I like the name Finn for a boy and Lillie Anne for a girl.

I like weird names, probably from having a boring and common name myself. I had a class in high school once that was literally ⅓ Rachels.

For a girl, some of my favorites are Indigo, June, and Niko.
For a boy, I like Emerson, Jacob, Simon, and Jack.

I’d probably tone down my odd tastes for naming an actual child, lol.

I don’t really have just a few favorites.

Hrothgar has a nice ring to it.

Elizabeth, Victoria…

I like names that can’t have a long E sound on the end. Like Cindy, Lorri, Candy, Suzey, Mary, etc. Same with boys: No Jimmy, Billy, Tommy.

@Mariah My two grandsons on the one side are Jacob and Simon.

Lovely! Those two are in common enough use that I’d be comfortable not reining in my tastes in those instances. I’ve used both in fiction writing. When Matt and I were talking hypothetically about child names one time, he brought up Jake. I said, “so, Jacob?” Somehow he hadn’t made the connection and wasn’t sure he liked the full name. I’m like….we’re not writing ‘Jake’ on a birth certificate, honey. Hahaha

I like calling him Jake the best.

Max, Mary Evangeline, Maeve

I apparently like M’s and V’s (and always thought I’d name a child in a way that pointed at my best friend).

I recently met a tiny human called Evelyn and I thought that was a sweet old-fashioned name making a comeback – and it’s perfect for that little person. The same family has a dog called Agnes and I kind of like that as well.

Max was trendy about the same time Jack and Jacob were so I probably would have skipped it if I’d had a boy during that time period. The playgrounds around us are still full of Max/Jack/Jake/Jacob (human and canine).

I study names as a hobby, and there are many I really like.

If I should ever breed again (not likely but anything’s possible, I guess), the name we’ve planned for a boy would be Arthur Eugene, and I also like the name Owen, and for a girl it’s less set, but I like Eileen, Moire, and Aine.

@mariah – none of the names you have written seem weird.

I suppose “uncommon” would have been a better descriptor.

@MooCows My mom became deaf in her forties. She learned speech reading and said never name a child a name that starts with and F or a V. Because you have to sneer to say those consonants.

Jacqueline for a girl. Cooper for a boy.

My son and I were joking about girl names. My granddaughter had scrawled a pic of a face in yellow highlighter. She showed her dad and said it was me. Chris goes, “She’s jaundiced?”
I said, “Jaundice” would be a pretty name for a girl, wouldn’t it!
He said, “Yeah! And I think Chlamydia is pretty girl’s name too.”

@Incoherency_ You left our Isis and Isil. Isis is a great name. (Media’s fault for using it for the violent organization of questionable origin and backing that they’ve got so many people rallied as the scapegoat.)

Who here is glad that I’m not there parental unit? ;-o

JLeslie's avatar

@cazzie My ex’s family is from Ecuador. He goes by John. Lol. John is actually his first name, although it was spelled incorrectly on his birth certificate. Not that it matters. Some relatives use the nickname Feeze with him, short for Fabricio.

His siblings were/are Diego, Ramiro, Silvia, and Hugo. Hugo is actually Victor Hugo, and so was his father. I think his own son also, but his son goes by Victor or Vic. All good names.

“Who here is glad that I’m not there parental unit? ;-o”

Is they’re any specific reason for such an egregious misspelling? ;-)p
