@LornaLove COME BACK! BellaB is right, there are no hard and fast rules. Just words you find “cool”, as stated in the question at the top. If you know a word that is related in some way, either in spelling, or meaning, or just phonetics, go for it, but it’s not necessary at all. It just has to be cool to you.—

Techinal what are we doing now? Making up Japanese words?

Espiritus_Corvus's avatar

@Mimishu1995 Hibachi is what we call a small outdoor Japanese grill for cooking. Tehachapi is a beautiful mountain range in California. Tamarind is a fruit tree.

@Espiritus_Corvus Oh. At least there is one Japanese word here. I meant to say “technical”, but oh well, it sounds Japanese enough :D

Espiritus_Corvus's avatar

@Mimishu1995 I’m glad to see that Hibachi is actually a Japanese word instead of a made up Japanese sounding word for marketing purposes. We often do that here in an attempt to gain an appearance of verisimilitude. One of my favorite examples of this is the name of the successful American ice cream company Häagen-Dazs. This is a non-sense name dreamt up for just that purpose by two guys in Bronx, NYC in order to make it sound Danish or something because the Scandinavians have a reputation here of making good ice cream. They even threw an umlaut in as a ridiculous finishing touch in a place where no umlauted letter would ever be used, next to an unumlauted “a”. That sound would be almost impossible to make and has no real use in any European language. What exactly does Hibachi mean in Japanese?

Rabbinical

Mimishu1995's avatar

@Espiritus_Corvus Just did a quick search in my dictionary. Hibachi is written like this: 火鉢. 火 is fire, and 鉢 is pot. Now you get the meaning. It seems that you Americans use the word for a kind of grill table, but actually in Japan hibachi is a pot for cooking. Nothing related to grilling either.

C—Have you ever collected the pine nuts? The Paiutes nearly lived on them. Seems extremely work-intensive to me.

Coloma's avatar

no, but I do stuff them with a PB & cornmeal dough mix for the birds. The sap factor is really bad too, they are all glistening with sap and that shit is impossible to get off your hands and car. haha

Comely

Espiritus_Corvus's avatar

Yeah, I remember that pine sap when we were kids. Those trees sweat bullets in the summertime. We had black streaks from head to toe and all over our clothes. Did you ever read about how the people that came through the pass to Sacramento the year previous to the Donner Party, how they vandalized and destroyed like a winter’s supply of stashed Paiute pine nuts causing the Paiutes devastation and that’s why the Paiutes just stood by and let the Donners starve? I can find the links if you’re interested.

Bella that is some great sound. I’ve never heard of those guys. Every once in awhile I’ll have a tourist party on board and we’ll sail into a cove for a raft-up. I like to break out the rum, put the long-stick tiki torches in the gunnels and blast some big, primal thump-thump through the speaker system as we come in. It’s very loud and they can hear us coming. This is perfect for that. Thank you very much.

My father would castigate us that if we didn’t do well in school we’d all end up bindlestiffs. (He was a child of the Depression) I had no idea what he was talking about. I finally looked it up as I was afraid if I asked him, he’d just tell me that, if I deigned to study a little harder, I’d know what a bindlestiff was.
