What is the statistical probability of finding a soulmate?

Asked by Hypocrisy_Central (26879points) September 22nd, 2016

Take the amount of people in the world, if your soulmate is supposed to be the one to complement you as peas are to carrots, ham is to eggs, peanut butter is to jelly, etc. the chance that your soulmate will just happen to be born in the nation you were born, then even greater to be in the same region, even the same town, and of all the people there, cross paths with you that you get to know them, what would the statistical probability of that be, would it be like 1 in umpteenth thousands (millions)? If a person finds a soulmate, would it be more statistically probable that each person as X amounts of soulmates even if 98.9% they will never meet? What if you moved or spent extended time in a nation you were not native to and met your soulmate, would not that mean if you never traveled you would never have met your soulmate because they did not exist in the nation you were born in? That is something for you who are number crunchers to ponder.

You’re assuming there is only one soulmate for you; maybe there are dozens. And perhaps there are hundreds, or even thousands, more who are “near soulmates.” Or perhaps there is no such thing as a soulmate and there are merely mates who are more or less “not annoying”?

There’s not just one. The hard part isn’t meeting one, but recognizing them and developing a healthy relationship with them.

Just luck of the draw I guess, some never do find them others do.
I got no rhyme or reason for it.

1 in 3.5 billion. If you only have 1 .

Many people assume they have only one, which is why when they feel they have found that person they do all they can not to lose them, and gain their attention and affection, and be devastated if they do not. Statistically it doesn’t seem sound.

Well, if you use the definition of “soul” that ignores superstition and simply implies a living person, than a “soul mate” is literally anyone you choose to mate with.

Probability nears 100%. Bob’s your uncle.

I am not certain how people who use ”soulmate” see it, some see it as some magical-like or enchanted bond that fusses then to another, I guess that can border on superstition, but then quasi superstitions abound in many places. Having anyone and everyone a potential mate to that deep of a level I think guts the idea of ”soulmate” for some people.

Probability would be somewhere in the range of 0.01—.999

Agreed. I’m with @janbb‘s “seeking the more or less “not annoying”” crowd.

Let’s be realistic and ask the question : what is the statistical probability that you possess the attributes to attract someone you would consider a suitable soulmate?

That is a question no one can answer, what someone else sees in anyone that tells them they will be a suitable soulmate is only in the minds and hearts of those who choose them. Since each are an individual there is no list like what the union seeks when hiring a forklift operator.

It doesn’t happen that way!!

I’ve given this a lot of thought. I’ve run the numbers.

The answer is 4.

I’m a number cruncher but I don’t believe in this myth. Add it to the list of myths I don’t believe in.

@Hypocrisy Central No one can answer either your question or mine. As with nearly all of the speculative questions which pop up on fluther, even estimates are pointless.

IF it can be determined that there is but one soulmate for a person, then the numbers can be crunched to the likelihood of that person actually meeting their soulmate, if it can be reasoned that there are more than one soulmate, then the reasoning will get nebulous as you would need to know how many other soulmates out there a person has. I guess it would erode if some had more than others, then it would come down to individual stats and nothing of a whole. In essence I would have to conclude with you that the idea of a single soulmate is more of a delusion people dupe themselves into believing.

How would you go about defining “soulmate”? Is it the perfect match to one’s desires or one’s needs? Can you gauge soulmate by the length of time 2 people can tolerate one another?
Or is it the person that brings you giddy happiness as opposed to profound contentment? Once you start dealing with personalities, the variables climb to the point that even speculation is meaningless.

You only know you have a soulmate if you are still giddy over each other after being with each other for 50+ years and cannot see it any different. If one was with their spouse for 8 years but then desire to split or divorce, by de fault, that was not a true soulmate no matter how much it appeared so in the beginning.

@Hypocrisy_Central… 50+ years, eh? Do you have 50+ years left? If not, how will you know she was your soulmate?

There are many people who started too late to get that many years under their belt, but if one passes away on the other before they split up, it might just be.

Unless she kills herself out of shame. Then.. maybe not.

Then I guess her wife will have to carry one without her.

Thank heavens I have not just ate. ~~ let’s just leave that as fiction, however if the Spirit did tell me it was her (and i can think of a few others who [redacted]) I guess I would have to have faith it would work.
