Where do you keep your house keys when you are out?

Asked by flutherother (34519points) October 23rd, 2016

I keep mine in my pocket but I see many people with keys dangling from their trouser belts. Is this safe? Where do you keep your keys?

I keep them either in my pocket, or, if I have my backpack with me, in my backpack.

I’ve never seen the rationale for keeping them on the belt unless you are working at a job requiring a lot of keys. If it your personal key ring with the need to hang from your belt, you have too many keys.

I have two keys, car and house, so in my pocket.

In my “purse”, which is really a messenger bag. Everything goes in there.

I live on a safe rural property and my car keys are always in my cars ignition, always.
House keys? Now and for years, I don’t even know where they are, never lock anything, and haven’t for the last 25 years. My old house on property, I don;t think I even knew where th house keys were for abut 8 years. It was quite the hunt to find them, they were in a little drawer in my desk. haha

In my pocket, tied to my trousers.

My house keys are in the smaller pocket of my backpack.

In my purse. When I don’t have my purse with me it’s a pain. My Ford truck I can leave my keys in my truck, because it has a combo lock. I love it. I want a combo lock on my house.

Mine stay in the van. It’s so rare that I leave or return through the front door, that the keys live in the van and are never lost or misplaced. I have to remember to pocket the housekeys when I do leave by the front door to walk locally or ride around with someone else. There’s a little sign at eye level taped to the door on the inside reading “get your keys DUMMY!”.

We don’t have house keys. The doors are unlocked and haven’t been locked for ages. We do make a cursory attempt to lock up when we go on vacation for a week or so but the house is really still open..
The neighbors take care of business while we are away.

I carry my car keys in my pocket. When I go there, I carry my office keys around my neck inside my shirt.

@LuckyGuy On the same string/chain right next to your emergency whistle? lol

Darth_Algar's avatar

I’m amazed at people who don’t lock their doors. I really am.

@Darth_Algar Can you guess where we keep our car keys when at home? Yep. In the ignition – where they belong.
Remember, this is the same place where it is not unusual for kids to have .22 rifles.
Some day you need to visit.

Do you think the residents of Mayberry locked their doors?

Darth_Algar's avatar

@LuckyGuy

I grew up in Mayberry and yes, they did.

Coloma's avatar

@LuckyGuy Yep, you won;t ever lose your car keys if they stay in the ignition all the time. I agree, that’s where they belong, but, for those living in areas with a lot of potential for crime that won’t work.

@Darth_Algar If the door is unlocked it is so easy for the neighbors to help out when it is needed. I was out of town and we had a power failure during a heavy rain. Without asking my neighbor came over and started the generator so the sump pump would work. (Now I have battery backup.)

I can walk my neighbor’s dog if she can’t make it home for some reason. Easy. No key required.

Maybe living on a mile long dead end road helps. There is no through traffic.

When I can’t keep a chained up bicycle from walking away of its own accord, I’m certainly not leaving my only source of transportation unlocked with keys in the ignition.

On a keyring in my handbag.

All of my keys are kept in my pants pocket when I am out in town and such/not at home.

Do you guys also have a sign outside your house that says “Rob me!”?

LuckyGuy's avatar

@dxs There is no need for a sign. Everyone knows the houses are open.
It is wonderful to be able to live this way. It is an old “neighborhood” where everyone knows everyone else. Also there is little socio-economic disparity and few teenagers.

Even if we were to lock up it would be so easy to just kick in the wood frame doors. These are old houses made between the 1900s and 1950s. Also my windows are wood and do not have locks.

No keys, we each have one of those beepy-boo-boop pointy things, like for a car, only not.

I actually hang it on my belt unless I am not wearing something that requires a belt. Then I put it in my purse. I generally don’t like it in my purse because I would be in a world of hurt if someone snatched my purse. They would have my car keys, my house keys and my wallet and phone. I would like to still be able to drive home and be able to get inside. Of course a mugger could take everything but a snatch and grab is more likely.
Also my purse is like Felix the Cat bag. My keys get lost in that dark pit.
