Why is someone else's username and password put into the login area of a website I frequent?

Asked by AshlynM (10684points) October 29th, 2016

I went to put in my username and password but someone else’s info were already there. I’m the only one who uses my tablet.
I’m confused as to why someone else’s password and username suddenly showed up. I never tried to login with someone else’s info.

Split personality? Or someone is using your tablet when you don’t know. It should not happen unless you bought the tablet second hand.

Could it be you were hacked somehow?

Luckyguy mentioned a spyware app a couple of years ago for sale for $40. Originally it was a legitimate app for parents to monitor and take overriding control of their kid’s devices. It was soon copied and used by perps within close proximity like libraries, etc., to wirelessly invade other’s devices and take control. This app can also enter your device via almost any download as a rider. That is why you really need to always choose “custom download” when downloading anything in order to control the riders. I can’t find it, but Luckguy would probably know more about this app and how it works. It might be something like that.

The next time you are at the login page, get a screen shot and save it. Then try to get into your account. If the password doesn’t work, you have been hijacked. You then need to contact the admin at the site you’re trying to login into and explain your situation. Tell them you have a screenshot of the login page with the strange info. They probably would like to see that.

You probably should totally scrub clean your device as well.

Aside from the issue that @Espiritus_Corvus raises, and considering the sources, both LuckyGuy and @Espiritus_Corvus, I wouldn’t discount it too quickly, I’m still thinking “when you hear hoofbeats, think ‘horses’ and not ‘zebras’ … unless you’re in certain parts of Africa”.

So my own supposition would be that “someone” had access to your tablet (and it may even have been a more or less innocent thing – maybe someone picked up yours thinking that it was theirs) and logged in with the “remember me” options and a saved password.

Depending on what application we’re talking about, you may be able to sign in on the same application as yourself and send a message to that other username to ask what the story is. That’s how I would start. I expect that you’ll find that the username is someone known to you and you’ll be able to clear this up pretty quickly.

The same thing happened to me several years ago, but I know exactly what happened. My brother was living with me for a while during a period of his unemployment after 2008, and I let him use a spare computer. He got so used to that machine that he saved his Yahoo! email password on it, so if I ever wanted to – and I will admit that I’ve been tempted sometimes! – I could sign in to his Yahoo! account. Unless he’s changed it by now; but I could probably answer his identity questions, too, and reset the password myself if I really wanted. I know all of his former pets’ names and most of his old friends. When I used the machine once to sign in to my own Yahoo! account his information appeared, ready for me to click the button and sign in as him. So far I have resisted the impulse.

Did you buy the tablet use?? Or was it new but a demo?

My (new) refurbished laptop has one site like that. I play solitaire a lot and the site I use has a ready-made password/username on it. I’m thinking it was from the previous owner.

My tablet was bought at Best Buy. This is the first time I’ve seen something like this.
I went to log into the site again and the already put username and password wasn’t there anymore. It had my own credentials. Still confused but not overly concerned.

@AshlynM Until I bought my new computer last year I had only bought factory refurbished computers. One of them had a few pictures on it. No already logged in sites.

@AshlynM It is possible that there was a server issue. The last week has been hell where I work for that reason. We had some people who were trying to sign in to their accounts, however it had somebody else’s information in username and password area, then we also had others who were able to sign into their account but saw the information belonging to someone else. We found that it was due to a recently migrated server.

@Escha That makes sense and probably what happened. Thanks.
