Is multilingualism required in today's world?

Asked by kartikshah (6points) November 18th, 2016

With the skill of being multilingual dying down as more people familiarise themselves with English, we feel that it is essential to realise the benefits of multilingualism and hence encourage people to learn more languages

Imagine you aren’t a native English speaker. Without English how can you post a thread on this question asking if English is needed?

Oui! C’est important.

Not required
But it is an impressive skill, and it can’t hurt.

It’s pretty close to being a non skill and more equivalent to a parlor trick. Voice recognition is almost to the point where we’ll just be able to set a phone down and run a translate app then talk normally to someone who speakes a different language. Look for it in the next five years or sooner.

Who is “we”?

Yes, @ARE_You__Kidding_Me, but personally, I’d prefer the ability to communicate with people of other cultures without necessarily leaning on technology. How proud that would make me feel, how envious I am of those I know who can do it.

Unfortunately, as a kid I was never encouraged to learn other languages and now find the chslkenge of undertaking it too daunting.

My take is that you will never really “know” or be fluent in a second language unless you are forced to use both regularly. Moving to a country that does not speak your native language is about the only way.

Not required, but it’s a nice skill for many reasons.

I find that I think differently in different languages which I believe helps me understand native speakers of those languages more easily.

People often comment that I use my voice differently in different languages. Higher/lower tone, speed, volume, pitch. Now I pay attention to others when they switch languages – if the voice switches, then they’re not do a literal translation – they’re feeling the language differently.

It is highly desirable.

It depends on where you live I think. If you live in Amsterdam absolutely. If you live in St. Lous, not so much.

I don’t think it’s required, but it’s needed, and should be encouraged, if you ask me.
