What is the best way to find discount fares from US to Europe?

Asked by Rarebear (25192points) November 21st, 2016

There is a concert I want to fly to in the Netherlands next year but I’d prefer not to pay $2000 for round trip tickets. I will be travelling alone. Where do you guys look for discount fares?

Start with a Google search asking for “airfare from X City to Amsterdam on X date, 2017.” That will give you a good idea of fares.

I do that, and then I go directly to the airline I want and buy directly from them. If a situation arises and I need help with my reservations, I have learned it’s best to talk directly to the airline and not a 3rd party purchaser like Expedia.

Thanks @Hawaii_Jake. I originally tried that and they routed me from San Francisco, to Portland, to Iceland, to Amsterdam. Not ideal, obviously. I’ll keep looking.

Expedia, Hotels.com, and Kayak are some other places to try. There’s an app called Hipmunk that does it, too. Use these search engines to find a list of possibilities and then buy directly from the airline.

That is not a good itinerary you mentioned. Did they only give you one choice? That seems odd.

I bought my tickets to Europe by looking on Google Flights (www.google.com/flights) for comparison shopping, and then clicking on what I liked.

I just did a quick search from SFO to Amsterdam for next April. Both KLM and Delta operate nonstop flights for $930 round trip.

Thanks. I looked at it—I thought that it was 930 each way. I’ll look again thanks!

The search for low fares may route you through Reykjavik because Icelandic Air has amazing deals. But you have to get to one of the cities they serve in the US.

A young man in our NY office went to a bachelor party in Iceland last spring because the air fare from NY was half the price of a ticket to Florida.

Most airlines have a regular email on promotions. I would sign up for every one where they fly to your destination. Here’s KLM’s.

Subscribe to our newsletter and stay updated on the latest developments and special offers! The KLM newsletter keeps you informed on attractive fares, inspiring destinations and the latest news.

Also, some airlines do not appear on Orbitz, Expedia, etc. You have to search their sites directly. Jet Blue and Southwest are domestic examples, I don’t know about the international ones.

Take advantage of one of those great deals that include a stop in Iceland. Everyone is just raving about their visits to Iceland. Apparently a great place to party and it’s beautiful there.

If you’re near the Canadian border consider driving to Canada and flying from there. I’ve had lots of visitors in the last couple of years who chose that route due to the price differential.

@BellaB Thanks. I’m near San Francisco, so nowhere near Canada
