Is it good or bad that Trump has confirmed he will not go after Hillary when he takes office?

Asked by Cruiser (40449points) November 22nd, 2016

Is it good for politics? Is it bad for the Trump “Lock-her-up” brand? Trump even said “they are really nice people”. Is it the right thing for Trump to do?

Considering that she would have grounds for malicious prosecution, he is probably listening to a lawyer telling him to stop.

MrGrimm888's avatar

I guess it’s a good thing. He’s recently backpedaled on some of his more radical ideas.

Part of his reasoning may be that he doesn’t really have anything to pursue on her. Or maybe he doesn’t want the possibility of the same light being shed on him. Their both crooked ,IMO, so maybe he doesn’t want to make waves anymore.

They should probably both be imprisoned, but that’s not going to happen…

He just settled his Trump university suit for 25 million.

He could be wary of another big failure in court,or he may simply have bigger fish to fry.

Bigot cabinet members don’t just elect themselves after all…

And there’s lots of pussy needing grabbing.

He’s too busy for Hillary now.

He couldn’t have ‘gone after her’ in the first place. At least for now, there are legal processes, like indictments, grand juries, etc. He couldn’t have just gone after her – might have suggested that the FBI investigate (which they did and found nothing), and the Attorney General would have had to approve any action.

So, at least for now, it was a bluff.

Now, whether the constitution is still adhered to in a year or two, we’ll see.

According to this article from an admittedly left leaning site (with credible sources), the president does not have authority to request or deny the appointment of a special prosecutor to look into someone’s emails or anything else.

Edit – I answered before seeing the previous response. The article just confirms what @elbanditoroso pointed out.

I’m glad. Do we have millions or billions of dollars for some vengefulness? Look at the Kenneth Starr thing with Clinton. We spent so much on that and for what?

Like the election & its result, that ship has sailed, move on people.
I mean yeah he’s not only possibly the worst man for the job, he’s probably the worst mammal, but still…

Like many have said it’s not really up to Trump, but I think it’s still good that he said that he doesn’t want to go after her. It sends a message to his supporters that he isn’t going to be a tyrant going after the democrats and their leaders even if he thought it was ok to chant “lock her up.”

God willing half the awful shit Trump encouraged while running was just a ploy to get elected, and he isn’t as batshit crazy as his followers who enjoy hating people and chanting like a riot of people waiting to stone someone to death.

I am not saying all his supporters were like this, I’m only talking about the ones who conducted themselves in this manner.

I remember the during the debates their was one answer he gave that I believed he was actually being sincere. It was when he was asked what he liked about her. He said he admired that she was smart and tenacious. It was the one answer he gave ever where I believed him. In past interviews he said exactly those things about her and has often said that he admires people who are smart and tenacious. He never had any real intention. It was the heat of the moment and it worked to rile up his base.
Plus I’m sure he is also learning there is a lot he can’t do by law.

“Going after” Hillary is the sort of thing dictators would do to consolidate their power. Yes, I’m glad Trump hasn’t followed up on his crazy rhetoric.

Mariah's avatar

It’s good, of course. It’s absolutely undemocratic to say that you’ll lock up your opponent if you win. That was a horrifying moment in that debate.

elbanditoroso's avatar

Trump may have changed his mind, but his supporters took it as gospel. It wouldn’t surprise me if one of them took it upon himself to assassinate Hillary Clinton and say that it was done in the name of Trump.

Trump promised red meat to his supporters. Now that he’s backing off, they’re going to be pissed off.

ucme's avatar

She should hold him to it, jail is going to be a much safer place for a woman than Trump’s America.

Darth_Algar's avatar

Bad for Trump’s brand, good for the rule of law in America.

josie's avatar

See above. He doesn’t have the power to “go after” anybody. If I understand my history, Richard Nixon got in trouble for stuff like that.

Plus, he has an agenda that he wants to advance, and he is now a politician, not a boss.

He may be a buffoon, but I don’t think he is stupid enough to not understand the difference.

He will need help, cooperation and reasonable regard from lots of people to get his agenda across. In which case, he will need friends, not enemies. The best way to make enemies is to treat them and their friends like enemies.

Instead she will die in an “unfortunate accident”.

canidmajor's avatar

Why is everybody believing him now?

JLeslie's avatar

^^I think a lot of people still feel like it’s hard to know what to believe with him.

kritiper's avatar

Of no consequence.

Darth_Algar's avatar

The one thing, perhaps the only thing, you can really count on Donald Trump for is to go back on what he says.

gorillapaws's avatar

The way she’s sold out the American people for big money, I think she deserves to rot in a cell, right next to Trump himself.

Dutchess_III's avatar

That one just sent chills down my spine. Our country isn’t built that way. Obviously, it’s a good thing. Plus he’s backing down on virtually every other campaign promise he’s made. Which is a very good thing.

gorillapaws's avatar

@Love_my_doggie Trump belongs in a cell for sexual assault, not political corruption/bribery. Didn’t he rape a 13-year old?

MrGrimm888's avatar

^NO…She wanted it because he was famous.~

Besides, he waited for a whole13 years. He’s only human.~

Dutchess_III's avatar

Now how do you know she “wanted” it @MrGrimm888? Do you know details that we don’t?
Some men are just sick. 13 years old is a child. She went to a party. I went to a few parties when I was 13. At one party I soon realized I was in way over my head, and I wanted to call Mommy and Daddy.
Sex was not on my mind.

Dutchess_III's avatar

OK. Well, I apologize then. However, there are way too many men who want to attribute grown up motives to little girls, so they can justify whatever.

MrGrimm888's avatar

@Dutchess_III . I was kidding. I thought the ~ insinuated sarcasm.

Dutchess_III's avatar

It does @MrGrimm888. I missed it. Sorry!

Talking about little girls that look like women, through no fault of their own, like that is just a trigger for me. It brings my hackles up. Because I was that little girl at one time.

Dutchess_III's avatar

It is what it is. Little girls are facing that still, and I guess they always will.

JLeslie's avatar

Rape a 13 year old? WTH are we talking about?

Dutchess_III's avatar

Trump has been accused of raping a 13 year old at a party he, and his good friend, convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, had in 1994. I absolutely believed it happened, but she keeps backing off of taking legal action because she’s getting death threats. She’s scared shitless.

MrGrimm888's avatar

So, they had like little girl sex parties? Where were these girl’s parents? WTF?

Dutchess_III's avatar

They had sex parties in general, all the time, with all kinds of women and girls.

Who knows where the girl’s parents were.

jca's avatar

@MrGrimm888: When I was 13, my parents weren’t with me 24/7 either.

MrGrimm888's avatar

^Yeah, but a sex party with old men?......

MrGrimm888's avatar

This doesn’t surprise me. After all, parents let there kids go to Michael Jackson’s place. With knowledge he was probably a homosexual pedophile.

Dutchess_III's avatar

They probably didn’t tell them it was a sex party with old men. Who knows what they told the girls.
Obviously they didn’t concede to the sex.

You can’t keep a 13 year old home if she doesn’t want to stay home.

jca's avatar

It’s also possible the 13 year old girl was promised material items (money, clothes, electronics) and it’s also another possibility that the girl had a crush on him. A crush but not realizing that to her, liking him was going to have a different meaning than it would to him.

Dutchess_III's avatar

There could be any number of things that came in to play. She was a child.

Cruiser's avatar

@Dutchess_III ” I absolutely believed it happened” How are you so sure about this? I was ready to testify that you Bar-B-Cued your neighbors dog while it was still alive but I backed down because of my fear of the media and the publicity. I absolutely believe it happened and also know you once dyed your hair orange too! ;) (edit) I forgot this…~)

Dutchess_III's avatar

Because I know his kind. Every woman here knows his kind.

Cruiser's avatar

@Dutchess_III What is “his kind”? Have you met PET? How many women have actually met Trump and can label him as “his kind”. IMHO lumping Trump into “his kind” is giving smarmy lecherous men who are “his kind” a bad name.
