What does this phrase mean?

“one foreign element of endless moment to him”
It is phrase of Carlyle’s book, Heroes….

“Moment” in this context refers to something of great importance or consequence. “Foreign” in this context means not belonging, or strange and unfamiliar.

So, “one thing that was unusual or apart from what he was used to is of such importance to him”.
