What does "infinite moment" mean?

Asked by arzikass (109points) December 13th, 2016

Would you please tell me what is the meaning of infinite moment when Carlyle says “he felt it to be of infinite moment”?

Thanks in advance

It means “infinite importance.” While the word “moment” usually refers to a point in time, it can also mean “importance.” This is a very uncommon use of the word, however, and typically appears only in older works that are either poetic or very formal.
